If you can work around the language barrier, go to the Tier 2 cities. Its cheaper, but the locals see far fewer tourists. Also, when you wax lyrical about the deep interest in Russia and wanting to see the real Russia, those women buy into it. Few people travel outside Moscow and St Petersburg, so they assume there is truth in it.
Again though, you will really battle to get things done i you dont speak Russian or you are with someone who speaks Russian. You also want to keep your wits about you. While its generally safe, you need to be careful.
