Who you know is more important than anything else...?

Unless you are rich/wealthy, 'who you know' is definitely an important factor to your success. I would have never gotten my current job by simply "applying" for it through a career website. The person who hired me knew me well, knew what I was capable of, and was more than willing to take the chance of paying me well (well north of 100k) to do it.
In my opinion, a college degree is largely overrated, but most careers require it (including mine). There isn't a day that goes by that I actually use anything I learned in college (and I was in a technical program), but it's still a requirement. I learned all I needed by working hard and meeting people.

Best advice I can give to someone starting out in a professional career is to resist the temptation to fuck all the office girls. I fucked a few who were just as concerned about their careers so they kept it a secret, but once rumors start flying, you reputation among the men goes up, but it goes down with those who matter at work - management. Your job at work is to network, build a professional circle, and take advantage of opportunities. Your job outside of work, on your own time, is to fuck as many girls as you can. Don't mix the two. Sounds like typical conventional wisdom, but I've seen so many guys fuck their potential away by banging their co-worker and causing drama in the office.
