When we consider the physical limitations and hurdles that had to be overcome with the technology of the time, some of the breakthroughs and achievements in mathematics, architecture, navigation, etc. are utterly mind blowing. To be honest, I'm not even sure that Chartres Cathedral, for instance, could be built in the modern era. The cost overruns and union disputes would make it impossible. Or you learn about guys such as Brunel and you just have to scratch your head at how such people could ever have existed.
