Sometimes markets work and sometimes they fail to produce a good outcome. Look at how the drug companies (i.e. Pfizer) shut down the development of antibiotics just as nightmarish resistant bacteria are on the rise. Antibiotics, used once, just aren't that profitable compared to therapeutic drugs you take for life.
