Tomatoes are very acidic yes, but they slightly turn alkaline in the body. Nature knows what it's doing. Just like with lemons which are even more acidic when consumed they are one of the more alkaline foods.
Acid is developed more by the starches, dairy and meats that are paired with these foods as the body creates it's to help to break those foods down. I've drank liters of tomato juice and have never bad heartburn but if I drink a glass of milk (when I used to), or maybe eat a big bowl of pasta then things can get dicey.
