If you're not comfortable on teh dancefloor stick to places that play hip-hop/house/pop music. As a guy you can get away with nothing more then putting your hands on a girls hips and just kinda rocking back and forth.
I had a revelation this weekend that, while I've been told I'm a great dancer in places playing the aforementioned type of music, I cannot dance AT ALL to white people music. Give me reggae, blues, rap, electric, I'm fine but if a band starts playing a Bon Jovi cover I'm fucked.
I do feel what your saying though. The Maryland (not DC mind you) area has a lot of bars and venues where there will be live or loud music, but no one is really dancing. So you cant use dancefloor game to grind a girl and get her going, and you cant have a normal conversation because its to loud. The night boils down to a lot of WHAT, WHAT WAS THAT, SAY THAT AGAIN. This makes me more hesitant to approach in general
