The pool of clients who hate their web dev shop and want to find someone good is—from what I’ve seen—boundless.
This.
Most of the people I've talked to already always mention this, the website they have is old and they were not happy with their current designer.
I gotta say your input is fantastic, as an anecdote, I had the option of working for this goverment company that deals with millions (so they had a nice budget) and everything appeared rosy until the last damn minute where you guessed, someone knew someone's nephew that could do the site for pennies compared to my rate.
I was furious, pissed and just plain gave up on this consulting, but you're correct the key is on being persistent. Actually I learned a lot while creating the specifics of the website and gathering people, pricing, etc. I'm now fine, and actually looking for more prospective clients, and will also create a company so that I can properly invoice clients ( at least over here, you can't really get a good client as an individual, you must be able to invoice for accounting purposes).
Btw, that company that did not hire me and went with the cheaper option, yep 4 months later and still 0 progress on their website, lol
