i don't speak from personal experience but based on the results of a friend of mine i'm gonna chime in and say that i wager that your ability to rack up a lot of notches through social circle will depend largely on the TYPE of social circle it is.
a smaller social circle with "regular" people won't get you as much traction as one that occupies an edgy subculture. these types of social circles tend to be highly promiscuous and wide-reaching: i.e. hipster, druggie, hippie, clubber, raver, frat, rocker, goth, etc.
i have a friend who's been plugged into the LA hipster scene for the last 4 years. he's 23 years old and counts 45 notches, with not a single cold approach to be seen. that's a fucking lot. it's all house parties upon house parties.
