I'm not a doctor, but I know enough to know that being a doctor isn't a job. It's a career path. What I mean is that there are lots of jobs that you can do with an MD. Why not pick your specialty based on where you want to end up?
Want to troll the third world for easy play? Be an ER doctor or do public health. Want to roll with the jet set on the French Riviera? Plastic surgery or dermatology. And of course, medical tourism is going to be big as people try to stretch their first world dollars by going to countries with cheap but reputable health care. Go into orthopedics and start doing hip replacements in Central America or the Philippines.
Heck, you don't even have to practice. You could spend a few years learning your trade and then set yourself up as an medical entrepreneur or consultant. A solid skill and the willingness to go wherever there is opportunity is the winning combination of the future.
