It seemed pretty safe to me for the most part. I was never worried at all walking around, jogging at night, etc. I did hear from more than a few people though that crime is on the rise pretty quickly because the city is growing rapidly and you have a lot of wealthy individuals moving there because its a large city with good infrastructure, is relatively safe, and is cheap compared to other large Brazilian cities. As some examples, the chick I banged who tried to rent me the apartment had a new car and it had a blank cover plate where a radio would be. She said it would get stolen quick so she just has no music in the car.
One of the CS girls who took me to the party was telling me her dad has had two cars stolen in the past 6 months.
All in all, I think they do have a problem to a certain degree but I didn't really see it or feel it as you can in many other places.
They are paying R$100 because the scene is LIVE and they have nothing else to do. Drinking, partying culture there...
