I think it's a healthy instinct to generally try to be a positive influence. And if you notice that this isn't the case, it's a good cause for reflection.
At the same time we need strong boundaries and not get sucked in to the pitfalls of over empathizing. It is not helpful to try to take on the burdens of others.
So I have no advice to you, other than learn what you can from it, in your own way. I don't think it's a good idea to just brush off the experience and quickly move on without reflection - you are taking a good approach to consider how you are influencing your world. You'll have to rely on your own insight to find out your answers though.
