Ah, but you're still applying western moral code to their actions. In Thailand it's far more socially acceptable to tell a white lie than to speak the truth and risking angering or upsetting anyone. There's a term for this that I don't recall, I'm sure RioNomad or The_conductor can go into more length on this. Don't let it rattle you you'll see a lot of it in the coming two months.
