for those with sprint, you can have it merge and use as a Google Voice number. Meaning, you can text for free from your laptop or when you're on a wifi spot via google voice. I used it last year in spain, I didn't get the voice to work in gmail chat so I couldn't make outgoing and incoming calls (didn't try all that much) but I have a skype out number anyway. really useful.
