Changelly seems like a decent option for converting from BTC or ETH to XMR, but I'm still new to all this. I'm not sure where I'd store XMR. Looks like the most reputable hardware wallets are on backorder til March.

Changelly is listed as a scam on the Monero subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/wiki/avoid

If you have a Binance account, you can buy XMR there. To store it, you can download the desktop client:

https://getmonero.org/downloads/

This takes forever since it downloads the entire blockchain (~30 GB). I recommend creating the wallet and key files on a USB drive that you leave unplugged from your computer at all times, unless you are doing a transaction. Print out the seed words on a piece of paper and put it some place secure. Do not store the seed words on your computer/cloud storage, because anyone can recreate the wallet with them.

There are no hardware wallets yet. Ledger Nano S is supposed to add support in Q1. Also, there is a $20 Monero hardware wallet in development as well.

Yesterday I decided to download the Monero GUI Wallet from getmonero.org but it looks like it's stuck or something?! In the beginning it was downloading("syncing") just fine but after about 8% nothing seems to be happening anymore and the number of blocks remaining is actually slowly increasing?!

Anyone have any experience with this and know what to do?

Thanks!

There are a number of things that could be going on. See this thread for solutions to common issues:

You may also want to try searching directly on Stack Exchange for the issue you're experiencing. Also, try leaving it running overnight. It is a lot of data, so it will take a long time.
