I have been living in the southeast of France (Nice) for the last year I must say that everyone is extremely nice and helpful. What the French do not like is that loud stereotypical Americans (like G described) come into the country and disrespect the culture by assuming that everyone should speak English to them. If you put in the effort to even say a couple of words in French people are eager to help you finish and complement your effort. I play with a sports team here where it is all in French with no one who speaks English and all of them are extremely helpful and helped me learn how to cuss out people. Also, I believe that the South of France is completely different than what most people see in Paris/Northern France it is like comparing Apples with oranges.
