I've always gotten farther off the beaten path when I traveled alone and the one criticism I have of forum guys is that we tend to stay together in big cities and tourist districts too much which seems to be heavily influenced by online game. Traveling alone can be difficult though especially for extroverts who need more social interaction.
It is much easier to find girls than quality guys to hang out with.

I've used meetup.com to find language exchanges. I haven't used couchsurfing or internations.
I have used this site before and I met a few wings or just fellows travelers for company over the years.
