I've been working on my own preparation too. I can't see going way over the top like those on that show Preppers, but it's not doubt a good idea to have at the least 3-4 worth of survival stuff.
I like the crossbow idea in conjunction with having a gun -- silent, effective and reuse of arrows.
Perhaps it's been said, but Sports Authority is going out of business so they might still have some items of use at discount if you live around them.
Not for "survival" per say, but while walking around the city, traveling or whatever other activity there's an app called GoLog worth checking out. I think it's for iPhone only. You record details in regards to whatever you're doing, and set a timer. During it your location points are saved. If you don't end whatever it is you're doing by that time, an automatic text/sms showing your starting/current location and voice recordings will be sent to your contacts who you've set up in the app.
At least if some shit goes down, others can receive some information quickly to do something with it. Pretty cool, that is assuming if a meltdown occurs there will be functioning cellular towers/service.
