This is the problem. What does "if things go south" mean for you, exactly?
Open jihad? Martial law? Economic collapse? Limited nuclear war? Pandemic? A domino effect of one leading to the other? In which case, which follows which and how long after?
Example. Open jihad begins, leads to martial law. Now, if you're not living near a muslim ghetto then trying to get a gun on the black market is a bad risk, considering that your personal risk level will be low as long as you keep travel to a minimum. In this case a pantry full of food and water along with basic entry fortifications will probably be adequate.
Let's look at another example.
Economic collapse, leads to open jihad, leads to NO martial law because there's no money to pay soldiers and cops.
In that case you would have to change to another pre-planned strategy. This would depend on whether you intend to stay and fight or find refuge elsewhere. If so, where will you go? How will you get there? Staying put might not be an option. If captain Achmed of the Paris ISIS branch and his merry band are closing in on your district it isn't going to matter whether you have a single shot hunting rifle or a Squad Automatic Weapon. This would be where having those friends and contacts becomes relevant, either in getting you safely out of the country or finding you a place in the resistance.
The enemy of survival is complacency and normalcy bias. People often die when they want to believe that things aren't as bad as they seem. Instead of getting out an hour early they try to escape a minute to late. But too late is too late, whether it's by a minute or a decade.
You need not only supplies but skills and contacts, but even all of that will be for nothing if you're not willing to get out before the door slams shut in your face. In the near future there will be guys sitting on a huge cache of food and weapons that get swamped by Mohammed on day one. Other resourceful guys will have nothing but the shirt on their backs when the shit hits the fan and still come out smelling like roses.
As for silver and gold, it's the option of the refugee. Ask anyone in Argentina right now. You can't eat gold or protect your family with silver. Its only benefit is that it's easily transportable and presently legal to own. Many refugees have survived where others have not by having precious metals they were able to barter with for passage to safer areas.
