I had a work study job in college in the public library system for a large American city.
Many libraries in American cities are daylight high end homeless shelters now. As long as you don't reek of piss and don't act like a psychopath the staff will leave you alone. Keep quiet, don't break shit or interact with the patrons and don't stink.
It also helps that the "good" homeless tend to narc out the trouble makers immediately to staff and law enforcement so their own comfortable day-house isn't jeopardized. The "regulars" can become quite protective of the library and will actively run off other homeless from even trying to enter. They go back to either a shelter or one of their sleeping spots they feel is safe when the library closes and return shortly after it opens.
In tech areas like San Francisco or Jan Jose, its not unusual to find homeless people with STEM educations doing actual tech work on a personal laptop (which they will defend to the death) or a browser based code editor on a library computer. There are even a few tech-squats where they go to sleep at night and for common defense. I've heard camp grounds are popular too if you can afford the plot fees for a small tent or sleeping in your car.
This is not the case in most cities however.
