Just got out of the theater. What a fitting release for Brexit day. Here's my review, there are spoilers.
There are no overt SJW messages! I paid 36 GBP for two adult tickets, a large popcorn, and two large sodas. Overall I enjoyed it, but I have my complaints.
I'm teetering between being glad I saw it and thinking I could have better spent 36 pounds elsewhere. Fun movie and road in well off of the Brexit feels i've been enjoying today. If you've got nothing to do i'd say go check it out.
Spoilers ahead!

The movie wasn't half bad. As someone who watched the original more times than I can count, the film was a half nail biter. I still get nervous when watching the original and the sequel partially delivered.
The film had way too much nostalgia packed in. If you watched the original before viewing, you'll notice similar shots, lines, and other one-liners that make you cringe.
The acting was all over the place. Jeff Goldblum's acting was pretty bad. He was more convincing in his youth. Bill Pullman's elderly crazy man antics charmed me somewhat and it was refreshing to see him cut the beard and go back to the clean cut 90s look. He gives another morale boosting speech. It sounds like Bill had a stroke or something, I hope that's just him playing a bumbling old man.
A surprising addition to this film was Brent Spiner. Dr Olken's role was very small in the original. This had him front and center in this. The rumors about this release having some "gay" characters were partially true albeit never mentioned. In the beginning of the film Olken is being taken care of by a doctor who has decorated his room in orchards and at the end when his caretaker is dying they make a mention about how Spiner's scarf was supposed to be a sweater. It seems that they heavily downplayed this from the original script (thank god) but you can still see the left overs.
There's an annoying amount of multiculturalism going on. The Chinese are featured heavily in the beginning and this "star squad" of fighters had this petite Chinese girl who could kick butt in a fighter jet. This dies down as the movie progresses.
Hemsworth was pretty good and kept a good attitude through out the film. Joshua Usher played the son of Will Smith (who died). Thankfully Hemsworth evened out his shitty acting. He had big shoes to fill. It would have been better if they just let him be his own thing instead of being a wannabe Will Smith.
Cinematically, it was a draw. I like big explosions and the like, but the effects pass into the uncanny valley. It doesn't look real all.
They do a lot of this "large stadium view" which reminds me of Hunger Games
I don't care much for it. My opinions on 90s era special effects were in my humble opinion the apex of cinematic special effects before computers bastardized and cartooned everything.
In fact, the Hillary Clinton lookalike and pretty much everyone who annoyed me in the beginning were quickly offed when the aliens came out. This happened about a quarter of the way into the movie. This was when it picked up.
The story's pacing was off. While the original was certainly had an allegro speed to it, it had a pacing to it that was still well nuanced. This just took off right to explosions in the first 10 minutes. The story arc was still too similar to the original.
Overall i'd give it a 6.5/10. A few hours after the film, I still haven't regretted spending the 36 pounds. YMMV
I was surprised they had the balls to kill off the woman president the way they did. Not just her, but all her bodyguards and associates all get stomped out, all at once.
