I've tried a few things but now I've settled on opening with "Hey can you help me with X?" and most the time i have some type of homework that i can use. Then go into teasing, dhvs, and i end by qualifying before getting the number.
I've had a lot of success with this. Also in what places on campus do you open girls? I usually don't open while walking down a hall, it just feels wrong. Instead I usually find a way to sit or stand close to them. Then start talking.
Most of my day approaches have been in the campus book store and the dining hall. In the dining hall its easy to talk one on one with a girl while she's waiting for food before she goes to sit with her friends. In these venues I'll usually open with a small conversation about books/food. One of my favorite places to open is the hall laundry room since its very rare that more than one other person is there, which helps since there are no spectators. Plus there's always girls in class that I can sit next to and start a friendly conversation with.
Our methods are pretty much the same I just use other props for the opener. Next semester I also want to try campus coffee shops and the library where there's always people doing work alone when I'll actually have work to do (this semester was a joke).
have you had success outside on the way to class? I once got a facebook from a girl on the bus but never led to anything.
