As a French guy, I'll tell you this about Marseille: do NOT. It's a huge ghetto. If you want to live on the French Rivieria, Montpellier, Toulon and Aix-en-Provence (specially the first and last are your better bet as they are major university towns) and near the sea. But Marseille? If you like living in the Brox or similar, then give Marseille a try but don't say you were not warned tough...
If surfing is important for you, then in Europe, nothing comes close to Biarritz (awesome weather, spectacular food and the finest wines in the world at your doorsteps, sexy and fun girls, loads and loads of tourists in the summer plus a lot of sexy locals, lots of great festivals in the summer and year long, not as expensive as la Cote d'Azur (French Riviera) and among the best surfing in the northern Hemisphere. Plus, each August, one of the stages of the world surfing tour is in Biarritz. I grew up near Biarritz and I used to spend my summers there as kid and in my early teens. The entire region is awesome there. Plus the quality of life is very relaxed and you''ll feel like in living in a Marcel Pagnol book. Smile
Good call. I thought Marseille was pretty sketch as well. But I was there for world cup 98 so I just assumed it attracted all the riff raff.
And yes, Biarritz is amazing. Believe.
What about Trieste? On the Aegean, close to Ljubjiana in Slovenia, some awesome summer party towns in Slovenia and Croatia. Not a big jump to Vienna (also a great town). Its not really like Italy as well. A cool mix of Slavic, Austrian and Italian.
