This absolutely works. I used this technique on one of the hottest girls I've banged. I could sense that she had a high estimation of herself and needed to be brought down a peg or two. I'm sure conversation with most guys she talked to went something like this:
Girl: "I'm (fill in the blank name)."
Guy: I know. (Said like they think they're Han Solo or something)
I went another route. I approached her and started talking, she introduced herself and I ended up bringing someone else into the conversation at one point by mentioning something the first girl had said (and poking fun at it). I later got the notch.
