Putting them on a raised surface (raised bed, kitchen table, etc...) then lifting them is best. Obviously you could hurt your back this way if you try to lift them off a low/normal height bed. I've not had any problems, but then I lift from a high position and I'm also usually feeling full on gorilla in the moment. I'm not all that strong nor real tall. Obviously easier with petite girls.
