He feels that way for the same reason these people support gun control: the idea that someone would have that kind of power and NOT use it to violently force their ideas on other people is a concept that is completely alien to the mind the of the leftist.
Which is tragic, because if they had the intellectual consistency to contemplate this vague insight and follow it to its rational conclusion (that no one should ever be trusted with significant coercive authority, and that coercion is nowhere near as effective in restraining the dark side of human nature as social mores and personal discipline), they might be proponents of small government and individualism instead of the handmaidens of Leviathan.
