Hick Judge forces man to marry girlfriend over threat of jail time

It's completely unconstitutional to force a marriage under threat of imprisonment. Notably, the probation terms also included requiring him to write out a Bible verse 25 times a day ("If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it." -- Proverbs 26:27), in addition getting married within 30 days. The judge was imposing his adoption of Christianity on the defendant.

Personally, I am not all that opposed to judges imposing sentences that involve religion onto people, provided that person is religious in the first place. A deep reading of Proverbs is probably more beneficial than spending two weeks in a prison with professional criminals.

However, the law doesn't allow it.

How is it forced? He was admitting guilt to assault and battery, with intent that could possibly be construed as "to kill" depending on how people spun it. It was 15 days in prison, hardly a long time. A buddy of mine broke a guys jaw due to his ex getting a new boyfriend [he broke the new boyfriends jaw] and he was only sentenced to jail time. No options.

As for the proverb, it's a proverb. Despite the religious origin it's words still speak truth. That would be like if I memorized a Confucian proverb, and then people saying I'm suddenly under the belief of Confucianism.

It's not a question of to what degree he was "forced." It's a question as to whether the legal system should be even be giving the option of "marriage" as a punishment for crimes.

I'm not sure it was intended as a punishment. The guy got into a fight for a chick, the judge I think, was trying to get the dude to realize you shouldn't waste your time fighting over chicks. And the guy was unable to realize that.
