Balding - ersatz - 11-15-2011

I'm starting to bald, in the same pattern as my father and grandfather. Right now my hair is thinning out in the middle and is hideable for now. I only had a 1/8th chance heredity wise to miss it, but I'm going slower than my father did.

What have you guys done to treat baldness? So far what I've looked into you pretty much have rogaine, hair implants and doing nothing. Some people have had hair loss acceleration when they started relatively early it seems with rogaine and it just seems like it effects your testosterone levels, which doesn't sound healthy.

Balding - Beyond Borders - 11-15-2011

Are you taking care of your body? Take a good look at your lifestyle and diet. A lot of my hair started falling out a few years ago when I was living in Northern Thailand and I thought it was balding, but now it's completely fine and has all come back. I think it was just a combination of stress and not taking care of myself enough at the time.

I'm not saying your issue is similar, as you did suggest that the pattern is the same as your father and grandfather's, but being unhealthy or particularly stressed out could certainly be accelerating things.

As for doing something about it, I can't really offer advice. All I would say is to accept it and just shave your head if nothing else works. It can start making you insecure if you worry about it too much, but as with anything, it's all attitude. It can either be a problem or a slight challenge.

This is the best explanation here:

Finasteride is definitely the most effective treatment in most men, by far.

Balding - ersatz - 11-15-2011

I don't worry about it too much, but I want to know if there is anything I could practically do about it. I started noticing it a year or two ago. I've been focusing on working out and eating better for the past few but it's still not quite enough. I've lost 10 pounds but it's platued and I need to start making all of my meals (eat at work currently). I've been overweight for most of my life, and my job requires constant mental focus, which ups my food requirements. If I'm just relaxing on a beach I tend to need less food.

Balding - Beyond Borders - 11-15-2011

Totally understand - it's good to look for practical solutions for sure, and I hope someone gives you some more useful advice than I have.

I would definitely say that if you've got a problem with your weight (mine fluctuates a lot as well) that you should put a lot of energy into that as well because at least it's something you definitely do have the power to change. Bald or not, constantly getting more fit will do wonders for your self-image, and if being bald ends up being something you can't change than being exceptionally fit could really offset the effect of that.

Cheers

There is a considerable number of threads on this. You guys should have done your homework.

Don't worry about the hair loss. I lost mine at a really young age. 20. It hasn't hurt me at all in terms of getting women. In fact, I'm getting more now, than I ever did when I had hair.

Balding - garygroundwork - 11-24-2011

finasteride works wonders but like with any drug that affects hormones it has nasty sides.

finasteride cuts out the hormone DHT (which is what causes balding) but this hormone is also needed to get wood.

other sides may include gyno, depression, no sex drive and of course as mentioned above impotence.

BUT there is no doubt it will help stop balding. think carefully and do ur research before deciding to take it. fucking with hormones is always a risky business.

Balding - Malcolm Tucker - 11-24-2011

If you want to fight it with hormones, drugs, or whatever than that is your decision. When I initially began going bald that is the route I choose.

After a year or so I realized that I really didn't care. Call me a stoic, but there are things in life that are within your sphere of influence and things that are not. The former aren't worth the time to even try to change while the later are a time-versus-reward-versing-caring thing. I am not going to spend my limited time on this mudball worrying about something so trivial as loosing my hair when there's fun to be had, so I began to shave my head and I haven't looked back. I'm with the above advice about working out and molding your body because that is something that is under your control to an extent.

Like most things baldness really is only a big a deal as you choose to make it. And the bigger deal you make of it the more power you give to those who would use your insecurity as a weapon or tool to manipulate you. Do as you will.

A Brief Guide to Hair Loss Treatment:

There are two main effective drugs for preventing hair loss, finasteride and minoxidil.

Finasteride
Description:This suppresses the hormone responsible for causing hair loss, and is the more effective of the two.
Recommended Dosage: 1 mg/day.
Pill: Finasteride comes in two dosages, 1 mg and 5 mg. The 1 mg version is known as Propecia, and is used to prevent male hair loss. The 5 mg version is known as Proscar, and is used to treat enlargement of the prostate gland. However, besides the different amounts of finasteride, there is no difference between them.
Cost: ~$70 a month for Propecia, and $2 a month using generic Proscar. Proscar is much cheaper because it is generic, and because the pills are traditionally cut up into quarters, with four quarters taken every five days. This works because the hormone suppressant effect of finasteride lasts a few days, so skipping a day doesn't hurt. Target charges $9 for 30 generic Proscar 5mg pills, thus $9 for 5 months = ~$2/month.
Side Effects: 1% of men in their 20s experience a loss of libido. It may be as high as 2-3% of men in their 30s. Side effects may increase when taking the quarter, 1.25mg pills, but the difference is probably very small, and the pill quartering practice is very common.

Minoxidil
Description:This is a topical that promotes retention of the hair.
Recommended Dosage: Topical application twice a day to spots experiencing hair loss.
Vendor: Minoxidil comes in two forms, liquid and foam. The foam is supposed to be easier to apply without itchy side effects, but is still under a Rogaine patent, so it costs more.
Cost: ~$15 a month for Rogaine foam minoxidil, and $5 a month for liquid minoxidil.
Side Effects: Itchy scalp for the liquid version.

This is by no means exhaustive; there are probably other side effects as well, but this is what I came up with off the top of my head. I saw a dermatologist recently, and he recommended taking both if I wanted the maximum effect, though he said I could apply minoxidil just once a day. If I did that plus the proscar, I would spend a grand total of ~$10 a month.

You may not respond to minoxidil, finasteride or both. Finasteride tends to be more successful. The use of both are frequently recommended.

These treatments are much better at preserving your hair than regrowing it. A lot of guys I see interested in it have lost so much hair that I would probably shave it if I were them. As always, decide what's best for you.

Personally, I think it's perfectly fine for a man to attend to his appearance, so long as it's rooted in reality - that is, it actually makes a difference, and not doing the male equivalent of a manicure, something that doesn't enhance his attractiveness. We're told that only women need to care about their appearance, which is bullshit, of course. If you had a really big nose, and know that your appearance would benefit significantly from rhinoplasty, don't let people shame you into thinking you're gay or unmanly for considering it. Either way, avoid obsessing over yourself or letting it bother you.

Balding - metalhaze - 11-26-2011

propecia has some nasty side effects. you have 3 other solutions besides drugs:
1-shave your head (works a lot on many, don't knock it til you try it. use some facial hair to emphasis your looks. eg: goatee)
2-hair transplant (the technology is getting better and better)
3- Use Dermmatch like I do (works great) http://www.dermmatch.com/

Balding - sine wave killer - 11-26-2011

For the past two years I had went through some situations that made my life very stressful.

for the past 10 years I grew my hair out (in locs). It was quite long and they looked great but I noticed that my hair was thinning out. I was really depressed by this, in a ways I felt that my hair was a crucial part of my identity. I had also become very accustomed to my locks. The reality was that I was so stressed I wasn't able to take care of them in the proper manner. They thinned out and broke off. I was able to tie it back so no one would noticed but it was just eating me away. One of my sisters has suggested that I take KAL silica, to help my hair out. I started to take the Silica (about $16 a bottle) and my hair started to really grow back. It was too late though my loc's were pretty much finished. I cut them off but I have a head full of hair and now that those stressful times of my life are over all is good. I recommended Silica to a few of my friends who were noticing some hair thinning and they've all reported back favorable results. In the end the best lesson I learned is that i'm the same person with or without my hair, but i've already started growing it back out to restart the loc process.

Balding - amphibious ox - 11-29-2011

try shaving your head with a razor for 6 months or so, and see if it starts to grow back thicker.
my hair was somewhat thinner in my early 20's, shaved my head for like 5 years, and boom..you would need to blast my scalp with a flamethrower now to stop this!
idk..could be genetics, but i'd start there if i was you.

Balding - Lemmo - 01-03-2012

Use minoxidil. It isn't worth screwing with your hormones by using Propecia and minoxidil should work well enough to keep your hair on your head until a better treatment is developed.

Balding - kbell - 01-06-2012

How long can you stay on silica. I read that its pretty sharp on a molecular level, enough so that it tears the cells of bacteria. I'm not sure how long you can take it for, and if it has repercussions to gut bacteria health.

Balding - Dash Global - 01-07-2012

im surprised they havent or dont clone hair by now.

that would solve this issue for the ppl with money to drop on it.

Balding - InternationPlayboy - 01-07-2012

I'm only 25 and my hairline is reseeding. I look in the mirror, think to myself, "That suck, I'm going balled," and forget about it a minute later. There's not much you can do about it. It is what it is. Once it gets bad I'll probably just bick my head. I also get grey hairs already when I grow a beard, but I don't mind much either because I don't look good with facial hair. Almost every man in my family is balled.

Balding - xsplat - 01-07-2012

Propecia and Minoxodil didn't work for me. The antibiotics roxithromycin and minocycline have evidence of stopping or reversing hair loss, as does topical application of proanthrocyanins such as from grape seed extract. I experimented briefly with the topical grape seed extract, but found it difficult to remember to use it before bed and didn't like the pillow stains. I'll have to mix up a batch of roxi and grape seed topical and try again.

Hair cloning has been 5 years away for about 10 years now. I'm hoping it's not going to be another 10 years before it's available.

Shaving bald is not a good look for everyone, and is a terrible look for me.

I've got a bald patch in the rear and not a lot left on top, and so use a baseball cap when I go out - even at night. The next step would be a hair piece. I plan to look into that in 3 or 4 years. Along with a little facial touch ups.

I'm mid forties, and prefer to date very early twenties, so pushing that envelope is going to require attention to these details where possible. So far so good, but every advantage available will be taken.

Balding - DonovanVC - 01-08-2012

so far i've battled hair loss and won.

i recommend trying to buzz down and see what you think before using any sort of drug.

HOWEVER, propecia is very very effective, if you start using it while you still have some hair. its worked wonders for me.

obviously, if it lowers your sex drive or the like, stop using it but it is very much worth the try.

minoxidil is ok but very drying, i dont use it.

eating healthy oils and oils in general has worked great. foods like fish and avocado will help hair health, just look at a lot of people in Japan (who eat alot of fish) and mexico (avocado), who have amazing heads of hair.

Balding - InternationPlayboy - 01-08-2012

Wow, this seems to be a real problem for some of you guys. I guess some cases are also worse than others, and my balding isn't bad yet, but I feel like it shouldn't take such a damper on you. I'd rather be bald than taking drugs that mess with my hormones. I agree with what malcom says.

I mentioned to a friend a couple weeks ago around my age how we're both receding. He got very self concious about it. It's just not a big deal to me.

I also don't look bad with a shaved head. One of the best playboys I know has gone bald, he just bicks his head, he looks fine and pulls mad tale. He has the same look on it. "Not much you can do, just make it look the best you can naturally." He said he started shaving his head around the age of 26 because of how much hair he had already lost.

Balding - WanderingSoul - 01-08-2012

I'm balding. Keep my head shaved real close and it looks very good on me. One of my main things when hitting on girls is telling hem how they have pretty hair like me, then I let them rub my head. Chicks dig it. Think it works well because it is playful, but also a neg since I have no hair lol.

First and foremost, the hair follicles need nutrients and the hair follicles can get their nutrients from the blood flow. Thus, one way of beating hair loss is to increase the flow of blood to the scalp. This can be achieved by many ways such as scalp massage and yoga.

More than a year ago i was facing that same baldness problem and used Matthew Gartson method with homemade masks (daily) + Vitamin B Complex + drinking plenty of water every day .... 80% of my hair went back
