Carl Størmer (1872-1957) enjoyed a hobby that was very, very unusual at the time. He walked around Oslo, Norway in the 1890s with his spy camera and secretly took everyday pictures of people. The subjects in Størmer's pictures appear in their natural state. It extremely differs from the grave and strict posing trends that dominated in photography during those years.

Carl got his C.P. Stirn Concealed Vest Spy Camera in 1893 when he was studying mathematics at the Royal Frederick University (now, University of Oslo). "It was a round flat canister hidden under the vest with the lens sticking out through a buttonhole," he told St. Hallvard Journal in 1942. "Under my clothes I had a string down through a hole in my trouser pocket, and when I pulled the string the camera took a photo."

Norway's first paparazzi usually photographed people at the exact time they were greeting him on the street. "I strolled down Carl Johan, found me a victim, greeted, got a gentle smile and pulled. Six images at a time and then I went home to switch [the] plate." In total, Størmer took a total of about 500 secret images.

His candid photos aside, Størmer was also fascinated with science. He was a mathematician and physicist, known both for his work in number theory and studying the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

Not sure how "secret" the camera is, since people are directly looking and pointing at it. But definitely very natural, and very cool.

Notice how everyone is modestly dressed. Even when they're on a ship in the middle of water, the people still wear full, proper attire.

No one is fat. Or muscular, really, not by our current gym rat definition. No woman has short hair. People are unironically smiling. Men tip their hats as greeting. NO ONE IS FAT.

Looks like a completely different planet.

Nobody is fat there right now. Well, compared to England.

There was no "game", or at least nowhere like the modern version. Women back then were either virgin, or married. You found your woman and got married in your early 20s. The 5%-10% who weren't virgin or married were shamed sluts, or maybe widows.

That was the society that cultural marxists have been working on breaking for the last 100 years +. It took several generations, but they've managed to do it, they've done a remarkably good job at it.

I fucking love women in corsets. That hour glass look is so hot.

What a different world. The great wars were such bullshit. The greatness of the industrial revolution and the era of the time was such a high culture.

Things really truly have not improved that much.

Reminds me of this picture of Paris in the 1880s. Subjects had to stand still and sadly all of the objects on the streets are blurred because of the movements. There are however two gents who stood stationary long enough to be the first photographed people in the world.

Can you see them?

I for one am grateful that modern women shave their pussies and are more loose and casual with their willingness to open their legs. Also that we have contraception and lots of awareness of sexual diseases. It's a good time to be alive.

Those were the expensive DSLR's of the day. Super bright light and long exposure to get the plate to capture as much detail as possible.
As they found quicker reacting chemicals it got easier.

Apparently, you're not interested in building a family? Chasing pussy might be great in your 30s, maybe still fun into your 40s, but at some point down the road that suspended adolescence lifestyle is going suck once the carousel starts to creak. Your last 20-30 years might be a major downer.

It's not much different from women riding the carousel, the main difference here is that they hit their lifestyle wall 10-15 years earlier.

It looks better; when things aren't shaved or cut it's often a reminder (probably a social evolutionary thing) of societal primitiveness; women tend to shave off everything south of the eyelashes, so why not there too?

...just trying to help explain the preference...

This is very weird. I was just researching this very subject only a few hours ago. My main thought being: you wouldn't get away with that shit today.

In fact, I just read a story (not part of my research) about the head of a big music corporation who was dropping spy pens beneath women passengers on the tube. He got caught by an eagle-eyed off duty cop. It was in today's DM. Not the same thing I know. 200K a year, wife, family. All gone for him now. His life ruined. He didn't kill anyone but he's going to prison.

Talking of riding the subway...

Kubrick was not the first photographer to depict the New York City subway. In 1938 Walker Evans shot many amazing portraits of unknowing riders with a camera hidden in his coat.

https://blog.mcny.org/2012/04/24/a-ride-...y-kubrick/

Basically Kubrick would ride the subway in New York at the dead of night, with a hidden camera (doesn't look so hidden if you look at some of the shots of contemptuous women staring in to the lens - probably thought he was a pervert) and take photos in the style of his heroes. Walker Evans being one of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_Evans

Kubrick was also very influenced by 'ambulance chasing' real-life documenters such as 'Weegee' as well: https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/constituents/weegee

This is a good rundown if you want to know more:

And on top of that, and nothing to do with this recent research, I've just been getting back in to understanding hacking web cams. Things have moved on now. They have microphones. Even better, they have speakers. My lord, what sweet fun. What opportunities. I'm doing this from a security perspective of course, not because I'm a pervert (ok, I am a bit of a pervert I will admit).

And now this post on RVF.

The Museum of the City of New York is working on digitizing all the out-takes from Kubrick's work as a photographer. It's a pretty serious bit of research and has only come about recently.

The work he did, the people he was influenced by, couldn't do what they do now. That's a fact. End of an era.

From the earlier link:

“I wanted to retain the mood of the subway, so I used natural light,” he said. People who ride the subway late at night are less inhibited than those who ride by day. Couples make love openly, drunks sleep on the floor and other unusual activities take place late at night. To make pictures in the off-guard manner he wanted to, Kubrick rode the subway for two weeks. Half of his riding was done between midnight and six a.m. Regardless of what he saw he couldn’t shoot until the car stopped in a station because of the motion and vibration of the moving train. Often, just as he was ready to shoot, someone walked in front of the camera, or his subject left the train.

Kubrick finally did get his pictures, and no one but a subway guard seemed to mind. The guard demanded to know what was going on. Kubrick told him.

“Have you got permission?” the guard asked.

“I’m from LOOK,” Kubrick answered.

“Yeah, sonny,” was the guard’s reply, “and I’m the society editor of the Daily Worker.”

I'm a massive fan of Kubrick. For me, his films are all just one big delicious photograph. He was exceptionally talented as a photographer, and that informed his later work as a film-maker and cinematographer.

The reason most people want to hack web-cams is to catch people having sex. It's seedy and it's low-life. It's fucking degenerate. It's also pretty boring after a while as most of the best hackers will tell you.

The reason Kubrick and his earlier influences wanted to take candid shots on New York Subway trains was for an entirely different reason: they wanted to grab a slice of life, a moment, a feeling, a mood.

Kubrick et al's intentions were noble in my view.

A deep thought occurred to me: what if he hadn't taken those photos? No one would ever know those people existed. We still don't know their names or anything else about their lives.

Photography is the most noble of pursuits. When it is done for the best of intentions.

Anyway OP, you really trumped my 'earliest creep shots' by quite some time. Thanks for the research.
