Campus police used pepper spray to break up a graduation party at an apartment complex at the University of Maryland early Saturday morning, according to a statement from the university police department.

Two arrests were made. According to the police account, officers responding to complaints of a "loud party and a possible fight" arrived at an apartment building in the 8500 block of Boteler Lane around 1:46 a.m. They were told that a fight was going on inside and that someone "may have had a baseball bat," police said, and a decision was made to shut the party down.

Reinforcements were called in, and pepper spray was used twice, once when an officer was surrounded in a hallway and a second time during a "confrontation" in the parking lot.

Numerous comments on Twitter have decried the use of force and questioned whether the incident was racially motivated.

Police officials said they are examining footage from body cameras worn by the officers, as well as from cameras in the vicinity of the apartment building.

University President Wallace D. Loh tweeted that he met with university police chief David Mitchell and asked for a "thorough investigation."

Interesting use of a click-bait title (article not Gmac). The first image that went through my head upon reading it was that they pepper sprayed everyone at the party to disperse, when in actuality it appears as though they used pepper spray as a defensive measure.

I went to UMD. Typical den of SJWs, caviar communists and basic bitches. Loh should check his yellow privilege and leave his gated compound once in a while to walk the peaceful streets of Adelphi, just a few minutes from campus, which looks identical to Mexico City. Then he might appreciate the police a little more.

The body camera footage will likely show that the partygoers were belligerent and confrontational, and the media will drop the story like a hot potato.

I only posted it because it's a local story and one of my co-workers brought it up. He said they would be rioting in Baltimore last night but eh looks like the story never really took off which is probably a good thing.

So your friend said they would riot last night? But there is no rioting..so you still post the article and point out that that the party was a Black party.

Hmm..

My brother has been at UMD for a while. He's been to that apartment complex and said parties there are always getting broken up by cops. Seems like this one is just getting blown out of proportion.

Unfortunately, American police use pepper spray like a chef uses salt.
