I've noticed this too over the last decade at sporting events, more and more fan violence. Do you think it's simply due to greater alcohol consumption or is it something else?

I blame obesity. People were angrier when they were thin. Now they are crazier.

you're not imagining it.

1. Mental ilness is up by 1/3 in 10 years...mostly in women http://abcnews.go.com/Health/reporting-m...d=14585730

2. There are no more facilities to house the mentally ill so you come into contact with the severe cases more often http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/04/...yrocketed/ this is what I've noticed the most: all of the big mental hospitals we'd see out in the country as kids with those scary 'don't pick up hitchikers' signs are now closed. Those people didn't just suddenly get better.

Read about the 30 Years War, or hell The Crusades.

Our problems are miniscule. Humans love drama and end of the world talk.

Its not some sort of epidemic where people are getting stabbed in the streets by people in hospital slippers, I just find it weird that these huge complexes that used to house the deranged are now just shuttered or being turned into parks ( here in knoxville you can count me out of the joggers going for an early morning run amongst the buildings of the asylum )

I have alot of pity for someone who is clearly not right in the head that gets put into the prison system vs. being committed...which is just sort of a benevolent way of getting them off of the street. The same for genuinely retarded teenagers that hit 18 and then are out of care.

Same amount of crazy, more alcohol, more "tolerance," less judging and shaming, more cameras/phones capturing it, more lawsuits… equilibrium's gotta find a way in there, somewhere...

We're getting better actually. I remember in the UK in the early 90s I couldn't go to soccer games because getting stomped or stoned to death was a real threat.

We are simply publicising this stuff better with the Internet than we ever have in the past.

Djbemba I've been to grounds and it still exists. Was your main fear because (I assume) you're black, or just because of general football violence. There's a famous video of a supporter with a dart in his eye.

No, its in general.

They had all the thugs coming in just looking for a scrap. CCTV and good crowd control did not exist in the UK then and they had free reign. Sort of like how Eastern Europe and Russia is now. And Spain, Italy etc.

Any excuse for a fight would get it going. You didn't necessarily had to be black but it did not help.
