It was one of those tree air freshener you can buy from Wal-Mart. How is that a violation?

I'm white and once got a written warning for an air freshener "blocking my view" and no front plate.
Was I profiled?
Why were you pulled over?

No front plate. In the following hour I counted 29 cars/trucks with no front plate.
Obviously I was profiled.

LOL..NOT sure. California has strange weird laws I hear. I heard Plasma tv's were illegal once( not sure if it is true).
But your right if they aren't looking for someone that fits your description and/or you aren't wearing gang colors he had no reason to stop you. But remember he could also be keeping the truth from you.
In NYC in the subways we are allowed to racial profile since it is MTA property and we have caught multiple nervous Arabs who looked like they were staking out the train station.
Because of that( and unknown to most) we caught 2 Al Qaeda members who had maps that they were drawing up when we caught them. One was a cousin of Bin Laden.
Point is sometimes there is a reason behind the stop that isn't articulated. But in both cases the guy looked suspicious (roaming around , loitering, sneaking around, sweating under a heavy jacket in the summer, writing on a map). So maybe not a good comparison.
Funny thing about racial profiling..I SUPPORT IT. NOT as a cop..but common sense because under counter terrorism training we had Israeli instructors and they point blank told us that our political correctness nonsense will get us killed one day.
In Israel they search the guys who look like terrorists. In US because of PC they search people randomly. In other words they might search every 5 th person. So the old Chinese lady who is 80 gets search and the Arab guy named Bin Latin (lol) with a bulge the size of a handbag goes though, no questions ask. It makes no sense. In fact the TSA will avoid purposely the terrorist looking guys lol.
I could see how racial profiling makes sense. And maybe I did look like some gangster they was looking for that drives a Honda. They could have explain that to me, instead of talking down to me and then coming up with some bullshit excuse afterwards to save face.
Being Asian and growing up in California, it made me paranoid and not trust cops.

Disclaimer that this is not a character indictment of everyone that brought statistics and analysis into the thread. I understand that many of you are generally interested in this as others are, nor is it to shame anyone that disagrees with my or others perspectives that favor the current state of police work. I respect many of you. This is about addressing the lame apathy that has become cliché on these types of discussions.
Too many(not talking about the this forum alone) tend to fall back on the dark triad perspective(whether they actually follow it or not) when it's convenient instead of laborious analysis on the topic because they have a negative view of the organization involved or find it to require too much thinking of others outside of themselves. What it looks like is a repeated lack of courage to give genuine concern outside of themselves. That goes for the apathetic media, the Joe everymans that have no personal experience with police and the general cynicism of this board. There's almost a subtle disgust for police and military on this board whenever the subject comes up. Some expert always has stats and numbers to pull up that just prove their point of how selfish, boorish or sociopathic armed services are in this country. Having an opposing opinion doesn't make you guilty of possessing this trait. It's the conscious and constant tearing down of character of armed services from a place ignorance in first hand experience of those discussed; it's nearly always from a place of envious cynicism and solipsism.
The path of these discussions have given me the idea that this board is not immune to millennial brand solipsism and projection.
Let me ask; if the police, fire services and military do it for the money, are we all only stupid and hopeless to enter a low paying career relative to the risk requirement, its reward is the chance to bully and kill since that's a redeemable trade off for us sociopaths?
It still baffles me how long it takes, or how little it's mentioned, by those outside of the forces to realize that for many it really is a labor of love toward upholding the order of society and the borders that stay protected. Civilization requires that volunteers willingly take these occupations, even when they are unpopular and surrounded by controversy, in order for the standing society to continue.
If the teachers and garbage men didn't choose their jobs in the first place, even with associated low pay lack of esteem, would society continue to function after we all followed the cynical fractions of our consciences alone? Ego can be a dangerous faculty when it's unchecked.

I'm originally from California. Unless it's changed in the past year, having an ornament hanging from your rear view mirror is in fact in violation of the California Vehicle Code. So is having sunglass with your side brims to big. Bullshit and silly absolutely. But it can make for good PC if you want to see in the car or talk to the driver. I don't want this to come across negative, but if you work patrol for long enough you learn that stereotypes exist for a reason, and yes profiling does exist. If a cop says otherwise, he's a damn liar and shouldn't be trusted. We have to ask ourselves why these stereotypes exist. It's because they are mostly rooted in reality and cops deal with reality. This shooting for example of the police officers. The black community whines and complains about being treated as a criminal class by law enforcement. Well, acts of horror like what this thug did will not help their cause any in the eyes of law enforcement. Instead of seeking justice for his "brothers"' the cop killer has only successfully inflamed tensions and perpetuate the negative stereotypes. Brother don't take this wrong way, but in California, at least in SoCal, a lot of the car and motorcycle clubs/gangs are organized by Asians. If I'm on the road and see a little Toyota zipping down the highway with a stuffed teddy bear hanging from its exhaust pipe wanting to race people, 8/10 the driver will be Asian with some serious interior modifications. But believe me, half the CVC is a complete waste. Even if you're doing nothing wrong, it's a sad fact of the job that if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, acts like a duck, chances are it could in fact be a duck. If you're in Santa Ana as a perfectly law abiding, hard working Latino, but like to shave your head, wear chuck Taylor's, khaki shorts with tube sucks pulled all the way up and an all white shirt that's five sizes to big because you like the style; well guess what? Even if you don't identify with a gang and have a squeaky clean record lots of others do and don't who have the same look.
If you don't like the way an ethnic group is profiled or portrayed by society or law enforcement the change starts from within. Then Write your congressman.
I'm out of this thread. Cheers boys.

True. Believe it or not i was generally liked(so i assume most are). Most interactions ended up with a thank you. Sure the thugs cursed me no matter what. But normal folks actually respect when you are honest with them or at least attempt to explain what is what. No one likes hearing BS. I also ALWAYS gave directions how someone could fight the ticket. And I was genuine about it. If I wasn't disrespected I would be HAPPY to lose and do what I can to help in that.
Remember I wasn't working to make politicians happy or richer.

Are you saying that it was a violation but they only stopped you so it was profiling?
You realize that there is another explanation or 2.
1. They done with their quota. You cant underestimate that. They be bigger dicks if they wrote everyone.
2. Those cops went omn to some other duty.
3. They went to lunch lol.
Cops don't have to write everyone they see, thank god. Remember you committed a violation but not a crime so how they handle it is up to them.
I remember stopping guys who would try to rat everyone else out that they saw. It made me more annoyed at them. In reality I told them I am bus dealing with you, I am NOT going to leave you here and chase down everyone I see.

The media jumps on the bad shit but I bet there are some pretty crazy situations where a cop put his life on the line to save one of their asses.
Easy to theorize. Harder to appreciate.
It would be interesting if all the cops nationwide went on strike tomorrow. Looting and violence would break out across all major cities knowing that there would be no repercussions. These people talking about fuck da police really don't want to know what would happen in their absence. I'm really getting sick of this total lack of balanced perspective on law enforcement.

I would settle for 500k LEO'S in the country making a coup e tat and regime change. The system is corrupt. Cops? 99.9% aren't. Based on wiki definition anyway since they don't receive money or any additional incentives for doing what they do. The politicians( commissioner is an appointed position, a politician of sorts) make the rules and consequences and force the cops to enforce it in the name of the law. They create discourse and put the cops against the civilians without any harm to themselves and then make speeches playing both sides against the other. That is really what is fueling the cops against the mayor right now. They aren't against the peaceful protesters. They are against those who are flipping sides for political gain.
Getting rich and powerful along the way the leaders make promises.

People get pulled over all the time for BS reasons. Even white people.
In fact, in my area, they are doing it more and more for the most minor little thing just to run people's licenses.
Was pulled over for a headlight out at sunrise. Not a big deal but kinda ridiculous anyway. Had replacement bulb on my dash and showed it to the cop. (It's a pain in the ass to replace on my truck. Tools required and not a 2 minute job) Still gave me a 5 day AND ran my license. Had to stop by the cop shop to prove I had changed it so I didn't get a ticket in the mail.

Great overall post. I would also add..it doesn't bother me when people say they join for the money benefits. I mean one has to have an occupation. Lawyers, dr's, dentists, Accountants mostly study what they do so they can get paid and make a living.
Many also rip off customers by making false problems(dentists) but forget that for a second, unless someone plans on being a liberal unemployed freeloader EVERYONE has to work. Some people like jobs that require arithmetic(accountants). Some like social aspects (business). Some like dealing with health. Some actually like public service.
I always see cops, firefighters, teachers, nurses, in the top 10 prestigious jobs in USA. It seems as a nation we do value people who take jobs that help others. Lawyers, accountants are at the bottom lol.
In other societies that are more GREEDY(Russia) these jobs don't get much respect because it is all about money over there.
But I do understand why public is always going to attack cops. Cops wear the uniform of authority and represent the gov't. Unless you are going to fly a plane into the Mayor's home, or white house police are the only visible people that one can't vent to good or bad. People don't have access to the politicians and those guys don't do the dirty work or ever accept responsibility.
Most kids hate teachers these days also.

As other people said, the problem here is the militarization of police, and I'd add an increase of fear and paranoia, tribalism, and "us vs. them"ism in general in the US. A great book I've brought up in other threads is "Rise of the Warrior Cop"- Radley Balko
This results in numerous, self reinforcing lose-lose scenarios developing. Just the same way a girl who gets black out drunk doesn't deserve to get raped, but certainly contributed, and could have contributed to it being avoided, the same thing is happening with police. Having guns out of holsters, storming drunk guys in tubs with SWAT teams and tasers, and killing pets. If there is a risk, (which the stats show is greatly exaggerated) cops are going to go in there with guns blazing. If it costs 100 of them to save one of ours, so be it.
Could those guys choking that guy done more to see him not die? Could cops of not tasered a guy in the shower? Could the cops had their guns holstered, given their real risk of death was higher on the driver there? Absolutely. Is there any benefit to them? Not really. They wont be held accountable. The problem is, while there are no short term consequences, It breeds huge mistrust with the public, and shit like this happens. The cops who chokeholded the guy acted rationally. Because they're not held accountable buddy dies, and people hate the cops a little more. Then cops die. Losses all around. Had the first cops shown a bit more restraint (and shouldered slightly more risk which is low in the first place) tragedies on all sides could be avoided. The second a very low non-zero risk becomes a slightly higher, but still very low non-zero risk, guns and chokeholds come out.
Cops fuck up, raid wrong houses, and they don't try and make things right. They go down the same path and try charging the guy, no matter how clearly they are wrong, trying to save face for their huge fuck up. If cops actually regulated themselves, said 'Hey sorry we screwed up, lets make this right', if I as a law abiding citizen had a nephew in gang or drug trouble could trust a cop to help him get through that without getting shot or arrested, then everyone would be better off. I don't trust cops at all, which is sad, but necessitated out of self-preservation.
America doesn't have a gun problem, it has a trust problem. Switzerland has comparable numbers of guns, but way less gun crime. Why? Because when I moved to Texas, and a neigbhbour heard fireworks(unbeknownst to him) from his house, his first reaction was that was being raided and to draw two loaded hand guns and run out his door... then he saw fireworks. Seconds away from someone getting accidentally shot and its a big joke to him. The US doesn't have a gun problem, it has a paranoia problem. Most people are decent people and aren't out to get you. Crime is the lowest basically ever, yet more number of people are on edge and want cops, arabs, blacks, or whatever other "them" group they blame strung up.

I grew up in CA too but simply don't have the same bad experiences with cops.
Although back then it was fairly common for cops to stop all modded up looking imports. They would write tickets for every little thing like exhaust, window tint, and even pop the hood to check if the numbers matched. This happened a lot in asian majority areas in the San Gabriel Valley as well.
Then again it was fairly common for guys in the import scene to run autobody shops and use stolen car parts to rebuild cars.
I'm not big on intrusive authority either but personally I was never treated unfairly and was friends with a couple cops.

I should mention that when I went to get it inspected they had to call an officer to come off patrol to check it so it wasted his time as well.
The cop that inspected it shook his head and said the other cop was ignorant for giving me a warning. He cancelled the warning and apologized for the waste of time.
btw-The truck isn't some old unmaintained POS and that is obvious by looking at it. I could give the guy a bit of a pass if I was driving some roach coach.

jimukr, appreciate your contributing a cop's point of view.
On profiling: it works. I'm surprised a forum devoted to red pill views can't see the truth behind this unpalatable fact. Come on, we all agree that Tuth's slut tell article has merit. Why all the butt hurt when you get extra police attention for ticking off several criminal tells? It's like the girls who say "OMFG I has tattoos and a nose ring and my best friend's banged 50 guys but I'M not a slut and shouldn't be treated like one!" Granted, it sucks if you're stopped purely based on your skin color, but life ain't fair. If you don't want the extra police attention, get into suit game?
On Garner: his health was so poor that the only way that encounter wasn't going to end in his death (probably) was for the cops to let him go. Is that what we want? (Some people would answer yes in this case, which is understandable. But then our disagreement lies elsewhere.)

Well don't move to Ukraine. Got pulled over there. Cop checked to see if I was drunk. I didn't have a drink at all. He then breaths in his breathalyzer and it shows positive. He was the drunk. I told him fuck off and drove away. When cops here start that shit then Somalia will look good.

The blatant fuck you type corruption can be pretty fucking hilarious though.
LOL..yeah it is a good story to tell at parties.
In Ukraine cops blame the victim. My apt had someone break in. The cops respond and say that it is my fault for having a shiny door. Girl gets raped they of course say its her fault for wearing a mini skirt.

Could those guys choking that guy done more to see him not die?
Actually NOT really. What they did was the lowest amount of physical force that could be used. They didn't hit him or go to batons or anything like that..which they could have.
Also they didn't choke him..it is confirmed it isn't a choke hold.
What you don't see and the grand jury saw was other evidence that the thugs don't want you to see.
For example they spoke to him like a gentleman for a while. Why do you think so many cops showed up? More came because of the amount of time that this was going on.
A sgt (actually there is 2, one is in plain clothes) shows up. And the order was given.
But understand the cops tried to calm him down and even told him they would try to give him a desk appearance ticket (DAT). DAT have to be approved by the ADA and only given at the command so he had to be arrested.
But most likely he would have been out of the pct in an hour or 2. They told him this. He was arrested in the past over a dozen times so he KNEW the deal. But this time he decided to resist and made it clear(said what can be thought of a fighting words)
Cops do what cops do in every society for centuries..subdue the perp. That means cuffs put on him. The guy still struggled against it. All of a sudden he said he couldn't breath and grip was losened. If he was being choked he wouldn't have eben been able to say that.
He had advance diabetes, heart condition, extreme asthma, and morbidly overweight. Those conditions can in itself kill him. Do you think a guy like that should risk his health fighting? They are still not sure if he had a heart attack or it was asthma or his damn weight .
According to a good op ed I read..NYPD had 244k situations in the last year just like this. Only difference is this time a guy in bad health died. A guy who decided to resist and a guy doing so with serious medical conditions.
This is among the stuff the grand jury heard .
Another think: The Mayor now decided to hand out 400 tasers. Well tasers are VERY dangerous. They can cause heart attacks in people with bad hearts. When the guy hit with it falls he can land on his head or break his neck. In anycase Eric would have fallen on his chest and die from the same thing that killed him ..his weight compressing his breathing or heart attack.

Well that says it all. Also the cops didn't know Eric had a medical history. Cops will actually call an ambulance and take him to the hospital, FREE, if they saw medical distress. Then when the patient is ready to be released he goes right to the judge. Many perps lie that they are feeling bad because spending a few hours in the hospital being fed and then cutting ahead of everybody without ever being in a cell is a sweet deal for many.
Also perps will lie that they have to piss, can't breath , etc so they will get one on the cop and attack when there hand is free. So it isn't like perps don't lie to cops yu know.
IKNOWEXACTLY worked in prisons..he will tell you this is a daily thing.
But then again the problem is the politicians. Is selling cigarettes without paying taxes so bad? I don't think so but the leaders, NOT the police, want this law enforced and the store owner(i think it ws him) decided to call in the job. It wasn't a job that cops ran into and could leave alone. It was a radio run which means it was on the radio called in by a complainer and it can't be shitcanned since it is recorded.

They sound exactly like Thai police who show up to a scene to collect their "fees" in the role of observation personnel, crime scene rearrangers, and sometimes as janitors depending on who's paying.
In Thailand you have to pay money to file a police report. A friend of mine had his phone stolen from his hotel room and had to report it to get travel insurance. The cops wanted 5,000 baht ($151) for the report and he negotiated it down to 2,000 baht ($60).

Since when did red pill mean you should give up a portion of your freedom to law enforcement/government, and trust them to do the right thing?
Also, you're comparing the behavior of an anonymous blogger to a police officer. Needless to say, the latter tends to be held to a higher standard.

Profiling works --> you should give up a portion of your freedom to law enforcement/government? I don't see how you got that meaning from what I said. I'm making a positive statement, your statement is normative.
Anonymous blogger who? Think I missed something.
