For all of our Texas players, Bronco Oil Field, Exxon, and Kirby are huge down here in south texas. I've applied a few years back with no luck. Alot of companies want you to have your TWIC card first. Its a background check and some safety training I believe.
We are having a big boom right now. I just got back so I don't know all the players or extent but whatever info I find I will post.

You're BA won't get a job but your previous work experience may get you something, especially if you have computer skills, but you'd be looking at an entry-level gig. If you're keen on teaching or have any experience as an instructor that could be an option as well, many guys who work a few years in a trade go on to teach at colleges or become on site instructors for things like safety courses. There's lots of options but as I say, you'll likely start at the bottom of the totem pole.

I worked 91 hours this week doing pipe work for oil in a shitty, tiny town going towards South Texas. No girls around, bars, clubs, malls, nada. The pay isn't THAT good (but the overtime came fast) and I couldn't imagine some tatted up Starbucks worker with $50,000 in college debt able to hack it out here. A pussy just wont make it with guys talking shit to you, extreme weather and long ass shifts. I can't really write a data sheet right now but will try later this week.
The jobs are out there guys. I'm working for a bullshit company because someone got me in the door and it's easy as hell to save up since I can't really spend to much when I go back home for only one weekend. I'm sure the experience wont look bad if I decide to go after a huge company later on. An older dude told me to use this as a stepping stone, whether it's for the company, another one or just in general with my life. Physical labor wont kill a young guy and you can stack bread quick.

Good post Houston! I was wondering if someone had some insight in the south/west Texas oil boom. It would be great if you could provide some info that's Scotian-like in how to get an oil job in Texas.
- Any special certificates we need?
- Where do we look for open jobs? (special website?)
- What's the pay? (to avoid getting lowballed)
- How are living expenses/conditions?
- Where in Texas? (I've seen openings in Odessa and in South Texas, confused)
- What types of jobs are there?
- Any jobs in sales?

nice post. over the last 5 years I have built a nice portfolio of domain names about the american oil boom. they range from americanoilboom.com to ohiofrackingjobs.com, mostly content site domains, job board domains named after states(including North Dakota), fracking domains etc. I have been so busy running my own business that they are just sitting in my domain manager and I have done absolutely nothing with them. The goal was to build sites, but I might just sell them. PM if you are interested.

Working with welders first hand, at least in Alberta, man they look fucking miserable. You'd think they'd be a little more upbeat with that sort of cash coming in, but I guess the combination of the fumes, getting shit from your boss, the long hours and just working alone can have a toll on you.

Done construction for a good few years now, and I'm used to driving shit like CATs and work trucks and heavy tractors. I'm a monster with labor work, I'm accustomed to 12-16 hour shifts in the elements. I'd rather have cash than an associates degree.

Just to throw an idea out there, if I knew anything about the oil industry and was looking for a location-independent business idea, I'd be setting myself up as a freelance business writer who specializes in oil industry topics. I'd be willing to bet a healthy chunk that writers in this niche make a very decent amount of bread. $100 - $200 an hour for those worth anything.
Don't get me wrong - I know nothing about the industry, but just knowing what I do about the writing industry, I think it's worth a closer look for men with the right knowledge or research skills.

thats a huge opportunity in that as well, if you become an american energy PR specialist in PR and Marketing. Why not? Start a shop or string together consultants for any business in the industry for B2B or B2C, love the concept. I think you need to have some connections and some knowledge of the industry though, of which I dont have. It might not hurt to be in an energy city too like in Texas, OK or Cali, maybe even ND.

I would just look around on Google for "oil jobs in Texas" and other similar searches. Like I said, someone got me in the door and most of my co workers were brought in by someone. Think of it like a construction job site, not a 9-5 with a HR team.

This one sucks and is ghetto but I'm not here to enjoy a vacation. It's like a big dorm trailer with 5 other guys and 2 showers. 2 people per room, a curfew and you can't bring anyone here.

My brother is headed for an interview and piss test in Denver on Tuesday for a job in Odessa. I saw the website but if he gets it then I'll drop the info. 15hr, 14 hours a day for 18 days straight. Six days off. He only has his CDL.
I hope he gets it so I can get my 3k back. I have a list of six companies here in South Texas that are always hiring. I will drop the names when I find the list. Its for my brother. Personally I rather work 40 hours a week at 23 an hour than 15 an hour with 70+ hours.
