My brother got me a French movie called 'The Players' for Xmas. Haven't watched it yet, but the blurb on the back of the box looks very promising.

Apparently it got criticism in France for being 'sexist'...sounds like it could be a good one!

Is this worth watching?

I was gonna check it out but I've read more negative reviews than positive, but also not sure if it'd be entertaining from a Red Pill perspective.

I'll be honest, I still haven't got round to watching it all yet! Very unlike me. It started promisingly though.

American Hustle - dragged on it parts, could have used a better editor. Used this faux-Scorcese voiceover technique that was a bit tiresome. Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper were all great, but Jennifer Lawrence was the ultimate scene-stealer, playing a Borderline Personality Disorder-type. A couple cool cameos as well, which I won't spoil.

I didn't get it. It was too complicated. Jennifer Lawrence is always worth watching.

From what I gather he rats and relocates his family to France, hi-jinks ensue, there's a Goodfellas screening (Goodfellas: 10/10) that makes him unravel and the movie goes through about two-dozen tonal shifts; it has no idea if it wants to be a Mafia movie, a thriller, a fish-out-of-water tale, a comedy or a conspiracy caper. About the only bright spots were Tommy Lee Jones as a grizzled FBI agent and Dianna Agron playing his sweet-but-psychotic daughter. 4/10, Dianna Agron: 9.5/10

The Place Beyond the Pines

It is split into 3 parts.

The 1st part is electric in my opinion if you like slow burn films. 8/10

The rest is mediocre. 4/10

Ryan Gosling is in my opinion in this film a great example of studying body language, attitude, facial expressions and how to talk slowly and have pregnant pauses.

A great example of how to strongly communicate to a girl without saying much.

I strongly recommend a movie called Snowpiercer. It's by a Korean director named Joon-ho Bong known for some good Korean movies like Mother and Memories of Murder. This is his first real American movie and I've gotta say it's the best action film I've seen in the past five years.

It's about a postapocalyptic world where the only survivors live on a train that goes non-stop around the world. I don't want to give too much away and I'd advise against watching the trailers, but it's a really cool premise with good action scenes. If you like The Raid you'll like this. Starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, and a few other big names.

If you like action movies definitely check this one out. I don't think it's out in US theaters yet, but it's on the web.

Just watched "La grande bellezza". (The Great Beauty)

Highly recommended, a tale of the moral, political and social decadence of Berlusconi's Italy with amazing shots of Rome with all its fantastic architecture, sculptures, etc.

"Jep Gambardella has seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades, but after his 65th birthday and a shock from the past, Jep looks past the nightclubs and parties to find a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty."

I just watched a great foreign film: "L'affaire Farewell" The movie is about a little-known spy scandal with huge consequences. Basically, it resulted in the Soviet Union losing the bulk of its spy network in the West, hastening the fall of the Soviet Union.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here before but French thriller 'Mesrine' based on the life of the aforementioned criminal and master of disguise is terrific.
Not only is it very entertaining, but it's a also a fascinating insight into France's most notorious criminal, supremely played by Vincent Cassel.
The guy was a charming motherfucker, a psycho at times, a cad, absolutely oozed alpha from his pores and of course women were crazy about him.
It's a long one but most definitely worth the watch.

That is a terrific series. It is one of those "the truth is stranger than fiction" stories.

One scene totally blew my mind -- and my mind is not easily blown!

I do not want to spoil the surprise for anyone who might watch it, but it was like -- WTF! WTF! WTF!

It definitely dispels the notion that all Frenchmen are pussies.

I watched The Place Beyond the Pines. Big Recommendation.

It's a movie with three stories. Gosling plays the Drive character, this time on a motorcycle. A textbook brooding badboy alpha with a young son. Cooper plays an ambitious but conflicted cop. Then, the movie shifts forward a generation to show how we can't escape the past.

I use Solar Movie and Alluc to stream my movies, and both are good for TV too.
Alluc is also the one I use. The site is quite good and is online since many years. I also use sometimes TopMovies, what i like is the actor section where it's possible to get full information about each actor.

I couldn't tell you. If there's an American version of it, 99.9999% probability it's subpar compared to the original.

Yes. I have seen both versions. Both are great, although I preferred the Swedish version -- if for no other reason, because of the scene with the cats.

I almost pissed myself the first time I saw that!

Keep em coming, always good to hear about interesting subject matter.

Who knew Tyler Perry was redpill? Watched "Temptation" the other day. Highly recommended to all RVFers. It's about a woman who finds herself in a "boring" relationship and decides to hop back on the cock carousel. The movie was villified in the media for being "anti-woman" so that should give all you guys even more reason to see it. [Image: lol.gif]

Its on Netflix, btw.

Rolling Thunder (1977)

A classic revenge thriller from the 1970s. Way better than I was expecting it to be. Like a cross between Taxi Driver, First Blood, and Death Wish. Lots of good footage of Texas and Mexico in the 70s. Tommy Lee Jones is in it as well. I wonder if the Coen brothers have ever seen Rolling Thunder? [Image: idea.gif]

From Ruthless Reviews:

Quote:Quote:

The recent wave of 70s trash cinema throwback films—Machete, Hobo With a Shotgun, Drive Angry—have their charms. They tend to remind me, however, of a stand-up comedian who specializes in impersonating one or two easily mimicked celebrities—good for a laugh or two, but never mistaken for the real thing, and far from capable of sustaining an entire act. If you have a love for that impersonated celebrity, his act isn’t going to satisfy; it’s just going to make wish that you were watching the real thing. And if you’re hungry for real, grade-A 70s trash cinema, there’s no better place to get it than from 1977’s Rolling Thunder. Here we have a film that offers everything we love about the period: over the top violence, sex, sleaze, vigilante justice, and allusions to Vietnam, all of it presented with a sincerity no modern substitute is going to offer, and all in a more concentrated form than perhaps any of its contemporaries.

Saw this not too long ago and can confirm, this is an awesome flick.

Have you seen the movie Charley Varrick? Another good one from the 70s you might like...

I think we could make a whole thread just of cool guy films from the 70s. If you like gritty, dark films that was an awesome decade for movies.

The Movie Thread - The Lizard of Oz - 07-20-2014

Fucking A -- Rolling Thunder is a great great movie, one of the all time greats. Unforgettable. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

And I could not endorse the Charley Varrick recommendation more strongly -- it's a f'ing sweet movie, unbelievable '70s textures. Matthau is so pure in it.

Damn -- it's good to see guys watching and loving some of the truly great movies. Makes my day.

I have a lot I could add to this thread. Maybe it's time to start...

The Movie Thread - The Lizard of Oz - 07-20-2014

Alright, I think the one way to follow "Rolling Thunder" and "Charley Varrick" is to recommend a couple of great movies with one of the most underrated stars of that time and of all time, a guy who was excellent and added a unique dimension to everything he was in -- and who was also in Charley Varrick. And that is Joe Don Baker.

His great masterpiece, and the movie that engendered an entire '70s genre:

Walking Tall (1973)

And a less known, but almost equally great masterpiece, also directed by the masterful Phil Karlson:

Framed (1975)

If you're in the mood for some great 70s Southern location shooting (Tennessee), the purest possible textures, expert direction and superb performances by JDB, check these two out, and I'll have more where that came from... [Image: smile.gif]

These movies could not be more appropriate for this season, by the way. They're deep summer movies.

The Movie Thread - Teedub - 07-20-2014

Just saw the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie...highly, highly recommended. One of the best films I've seen in years. At least in terms of hyped-up ones.

I was a fan of the first one (with James Franco, not the one from decades ago), but even if I hadn't even seen it I would have loved this sequel. Some of the performance-capture performances are top class, and just as worthy of acclaim as 'traditional' acting. In the future, it will probably become more commonplace.
