I've tried this opener on two girls, both 8/10's. One responded very well.

I tell a girl that they look like a low-profile actress, like Lake Bell, as an opener. the vast majority of girls will have no idea what you're talking about and get interested once you tell them that the person in question is an actress. It works as a subtle neg because they don't know if she's hot or ugly.

It also fulfills their fame-obsession.

I sometimes tell girls they look like someone I know (X) and tell a short funny story about X that is slightly deprecating.
Usually, the girl would say "Why do you tell me I look like X, people usually tell me I look like [insert favorite celebrity]" - which gives you an opportunity to deliver a great neg by just saying "Really." and then changing the topic.
