Medical testing for optimization?

Medical testing for optimization?

Some background. I'm fairly new to the "fitness" scene. I started Crossfit almost a year ago and saw some good gains, but after taking a break because of bronchitis, I decided to try another gym and focus more on strength rather than the heavy cardio of Crossfit (issues with my heart, I can't get enough oxygen for a lot of Crossfit routines).

Since I'm an older guy and I am sure my testosterone is on the low side, I asked my trainer for recommendations for a doctor that will do the detailed testing and evaluations of where I am and what micronutrients I should look at supplementing. He recommended a "Holistic" doctor that his wife has seen who actually digs into test results instead of giving the "within normal range" answer.

So, I contacted the doctor and she suggests not only the detailed blood tests, but also genetic testing and told me it will cost about $1K. Given what I have been paying for the mediocre health care I've been getting, it's not a scary amount of money.

Any thoughts?

1) How old are you?

2) What are your health issues? You talked about heart issues?

3) What kind of blood tests and genetic tests? what is the main purpose of them?

T blood checks are not so expensive, you may start with:

- Total T
- Free T
- SHBG
- LH
- FSH
- Estradiol
- Vitamin D 25 OH (important for T)
- Zink (important for T)

If you want also Thyroid hormones tests:

- TSH
- FT3
- FT4

If you are not so young I would suggest also to check:

- Ferritin
- Sg-HbA1C Glycosylated hemoglobin

Crossfit if done correctly is good for boosting T

To answer in order. I'm 61. I was born with a heart murmur, it limits how much oxygen I can get. I'm also trying to deal with hypertension and my current Primary Care doctor is a moron.

I have done a fair amount of research on boosting testosterone, but I would like to have somebody with a clue involved. I've heard a good recommendation about this doctor and maybe a number of other issues can be addressed as well.

Crossfit is heavy on the cardio workouts, which I run out of oxygen very quickly. I want to do more strength training and I'm trying to gain weight.

To boost T naturally things to do are well known you can easily find them in the web, I don't know what a doctor consultation can add more, but if you want try it's your call.

things to do are as following:

1) lifestyle: good and regular sleep habits, rest, avoid stress, don't work 14 hours per day.

2) Training since you are 61 years old I would suggest to train for no more than one our and no more than 3-4 times per week. Maybe you can also hold up 6 times per week, but it depends on you. Weight training and HIIT are both good. you may do 2 times per week strength training and 1 time crossfit.

3) Diet: cut sugar it kills T, alcool (less as possible), cut all junk food and eat only good quality one, like organic, grass fed beef, wild fish etc

3) Supplements, depends on your lacks: D3 vitamin, zinc, Boron, Copper, Magnesium, Omega 3... and much more.

For high blood pressure both magnesium and Omega 3 are good.
