Secure crypto wallets you can recommend?

For the longest time I've stashed my crypto in Parity which is a hot wallet that keeps my keystore (password encrypted private key). After listening to McAfee talk about how hackers work I've become increasingly paranoid. I've talked to a couple of people here and the consensus is hardware wallets, Metamask, and a few using paper wallets.

Everyone says their method of security storage is the best. Some say paper wallets are unhackable but:

A bulk of people say the ledger nano is bullet proof but it seems to have a set of exploits to be weary of.

I prefer to keep funds in cold storage now. I now diversify my holdings in different wallets. 25% ledger nano s, 25% Trezor, 48% paper wallet, 2% on exchanges in case I need to sell urgently for fiat.

What are some of the better methods you know of?

I use a Trezor and for everything which isn't supported with Trezor I have a second offline laptop with the desktop wallets.

It's annoying having everything scattered over multiple wallets/keys though.

These two projects look good, but not got working products out yet.

Heard trezor or nano are the best.

There are some phone apps that support altcoins the above wallets do not yet list.

iOS is hard to crack (having an alphanumeric password and the latest update). Stay away from jailbreak.

Try BRD wallet (breadapp.com). Write your seed password and keep it safe. That seed keeps BTC, BCH and ETH information.

I've been using Copay for years. Have multi-sig among many other features. But lately I noticed they're adding features, changing the UI and not focusing on stability. That's why I recommend BRD instead. Give it a try.

Just get a Ledger or Trezor. I have both, and prefer the Trezor by a little bit. There might be theoretical exploits, so be always be careful anyway when sending serious $. Eg. don't trust anything you see on your computer screen, verify every send/receive address, test with small amounts...
Consensus is that this is the most safe method. Use an extra passphrase with some play money on that to protect against a 5$ wrench attack.

You could also work with an offline computer (or maybe an offline android phone) where you install software on (that you trust). E.g. "Armory".

You'll still need to backup your seed, eg split my seed and give partial copies to friends, or store it in a safe...

Remark that you're never 100% sure, you'll always need SOME trust. Be extremely careful, but don't get paranoid either.
Resist the urge to brag/talk about crypto as much as possible... Don't make yourself a target.

Anyone had any experience with a nano ledger? My mate just bought one

I bought a nano ledge and then never used it because I sold all my cryptos one day before it arrived.

So I have experience with it sitting in my dresser drawer, does that count?

I use the ledger nano, it's pretty great. Easy to use and I feel a lot better about having crypto and Windows in the same sentence.

Where did you buy it from?

From their website, it's the only safe place to buy it from.

I have a trezor but you need to download the trezor bridge app on every PC you use just so you can enter the security pin. With the ledger nano you just go MEW on any PC without having to downloaded any software. It's convenient if you have your hardware wallet on you if you can instantly send money without having to download on someone else's pc.

With the ledger nano it is easy to take it apart and inspect it to see the inside for physical tampering. With trezor this is practically impossible unless you get a mini saw to cut around the edges. With the ledger you only need a razor or a sharp small knife.

Another problem is that the trezor hardware display. It will show the address you are sending to but doesn't recognize most tokens and refers to them as "unknown tokens". This isn't the case with the ledger nano as long as you have the most current firmware installed.

They are both good but I think the ledger is better and cheaper now.

Looks like everyone really answered the question for you. I personally use a Ledger Nano S. When my portfolio was over 1k I knew I had to get a hardware wallet. That's mandatory.

I bought mine from coinstop but I personally opened mine up with a knife to inspect the interior of the ledger nano and also newly configured it as a new device (of course).

I have to say, I prefer the nano ledger over the trezor now. I just learned about this recently but the trezor can be physically hacked if someone gets their hands on your wallet. It involves opening it up and using a paperclip or wire to connect two circuits and they get your PIN and get access. This can done easily within minutes if they know what they are doing so you might not have enough time to quickly transfer your funds out in time. If you carry your trezor with you a hacker won't even need to beat you with a $5 wrench to steal your funds. The other issue was convenience; having to download the trezor bridge app before using it different PCs. For these reasons, I won't be carrying it around outside or taking it abroad.

Ledger is the safest. Don't even try to mess with paper wallets.

I prefer the Ledger over the Trezor. My Trezor would not update to the latest firmware so I transferred the balances over to the Ledger.

I also have the Bitcoin.com phone wallet. It seems pretty good although I haven't used it much at all.

Bitcoin.com is also in the process of making their own hardware wallet.

Do not buy hardware wallets IF
- it's a reseller (buy only from manufacturer directly, intermediate parties can be malicious actors and have proven to be so!)
- they support tons of shitcoins besides the top 5 (there are very few cryptographic security engineers in hardware wallet companies, they can only divide their attention so much before they make it too unsafe)
- you can't have it sent to you in an anonymized package (keep it discrete)

https://twitter.com/gertvdijk/status/992073475023147008

Even then you're not 100% sure, so it's even better to store your private keys on a small laptop which you lock away.

I posted in the Lounge, just tried to start the ledger nano S but I can't even get the firmware because it won't let me delete (preloaded, why?) apps that are on there in order to have enough room to load the new ware. Seems juvenile in planning.

I'm able to delete apps when I want to. I would contact Ledger support.

I had a similar problem but with the Trezor. I was never able to update it so I transfered all my funds out of that wallet.

They sent me another one. Do you think anyone can use the first one, maybe it was an OS thing that a different operator might be able to?
