What to do in the evening instead of watching TV?
04-03-2018, 02:47 AM
I'm been working on ridding myself of bad habits where my life is so much better now. Nofap, no video games, social media, eating better, drinking less and I've given up smoking. These one thing I've have problems breaking in the evening which is TV/Movies. What do you guys do in the evening that's a good habit?

Things I do in the evening:
- Produce music
- Spin music
- Read books
- Exercise
- Plan my next day
- Review
All these things are part of my mission... So I think the best thing you can do now is contemplate what your mission will be. What do you want do to with your life? What do you want to accomplish etc?

Haven't had a TV for five years. Never going back.
Learn an instrument.

I tend to browse the Reddit documentary list and pluck the best. It's super relaxing, regardless of topic. Also, YouTube vids of EDC mods, hacks, various DAW software tips and biz videos. Gotta be careful not to waste 2hrs on some JRE shit though
Reading actual books too, mostly non fic. Burpees and Tons of guitar

Youtube lectures, magazines, or books. Also a good time to call friends and family and catch up.

I haven't had a TV for ages now, but 'm currently staying in an Airbnb that has one and I'll sometimes watch local channels when learning the local language.
When energy levels are low after a hard day it's not always possible to do high focus tasks like reading or meditation, but it can work if you keep it light.
For example, reading children's comics (I'm currently learning Spanish, so I have Tintin in Spanish) or cartoons (Spongebob in Spanish and Russian).

If you are learning a language I suggest listening to some flagship talk radioshows in that language (real quality out their especially in Arabic and French). You need not listen actively but playing it softly as you read, exercise etc. can be quite fun and gently stimulating.
As mentioned abpve, you should probably split your time between exercise/some intellectual pursuit and meditation in equal measure.

My evening routine looks something like this:
530 PM: Get home, eat a snack, do some Duolingo (Spanish)
6-7 PM: Workout
7 PM: Shower, cook/eat dinner, watch Netflix
830 PM: Play guitar
9 PM: Work on online biz, followed by surfing RVF and Twitter
10 PM: Get ready for bed and prep for next day
1030 PM: Read until I fall asleep
You can really pack a lot of stuff into your evening. Just don't fall into the trap of spending hours on TV and internet, though it looks like you won't have that problem.

Plenty to do, almost to a point when I am around friends/family that are obsessed with TV, I feel sorry for them. I heard a couple younger cousins talk about doing a binge watch of some show on netflix. I asked how many hours they spent watching, they said 7.
There is nothing at all I would give 7 hours of my life to sit and watch like a dying vegetable.

lift, martial arts, language learning, bar or club (depending on how busy I am), or read things online.
Lately I've been trying to go to the gym earlier in the evening compared to usual, since the majority of the time I end up going late at night.

Seriously, give up the TV and read a good book. I haven't had a TV set up in my home in four years. I actually received a brand new Toshiba HD TV two years ago as a gift and it still sits in the corner of my living room packed up in the original box that it came in. I actually got use to not having a working TV at home.
I recently had to travel to visit my elderly mother and I had to watch more TV in that entire week than I have in the past four years while visiting her. It actually felt kind of odd watching TV again.
