Some good finds, MrRoundtree, and you point (heh) to an interesting phenomenon, the song that came and went in the US but stayed popular in Europe.

Over a decade after disco was dead, I traveled in Europe and couldn't get away from Sister Sledge.

I heard this song everywhere:

The two Canadian hippies I was traveling with got so tired of it, they sang their own parody version called "Lost in Muesli."

Another Sister Sledge disco classic that came and went and now you only hear it at family reunions:

“The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.”

There's good disco, for example Chic, which had a more sophisticated sound thanks to Nile Rodgers' jazz-leanings like in "Soup For One" or "Everybody Dance" (and production, check out his credits)

and bad disco, like "Disco Duck"... ( I won't post that here)

Hell, even Queen did it

quick sidenote: the whole Hot Space album was basically an album designed to sound like a gay club, albeit not by the band, as explained here from 4:30 onward

I venture, if they would've had their shit together, we wouldn't call Thriller the best selling album of all-time...

This was actually written by KC. But the record company didn't think he could hit the high notes. They gave it to George McCrae, and it hit #1:

Ah yes, Jamiroquai. One of the better things from the 90's.

It's interesting how the band changed from the acid jazz/Stevie Wonder leanings on the first album ( Emergency On Planet Earth) to gradually having more supermodel friendly dance tracks in subsequent albums. Great stuff, nonetheless.

Was only a kid during the disco era, but I can tell you it had a lot more influence on the culture than people give it credit for. It's a mixed bag...some bad music, of course, but then some priceless gems. What female vocalist today can rival the Queen of Disco, her Highness, Ms. Donna Summer, in suggestive sensual power? Listen to this, and watch how she moves and sings. This is what sensuality looks like:

Oh yeah.

Donna Summer never got the credit she really deserved. She got pidgeon-holed as the "Queen of Disco" but her vocal talents and abilities far greater than just that. If you just listen to her voice and disregard the music you will hear what I mean. She had a range that was absolutely amazing and powerful: from thick, rich sultry lows to her clear almost crystalline highs its as close to "perfect" as a voice could be. Listen to these to "lesser known" songs from her incredible Bad Girls album* and focus on her vocals.

This thread wouldn't be complete without homage to perhaps the greatest dance music innovator and producer Georgio Moroder. Separate post to follow

Here's a really obscure disco track from 1981. Produced by Georgio Moroder it came at the tail end of disco and its one the earliest "euro industrial dance" genre that eventually became trance and then what became known as EDM

We're getting a bit meta with this one...

House music utilizing samples from disco tracks:

Samples used (in order of the videos):
- Abba "Lay all your love on me"
- Diana Ross "Upside Down"
- Norma Jean Wright "Sorcerer" (produced by Nile Rodgers!)
- Chic "My Forbidden Lover"
- Pino D'Angio "Ma Quale Idea"

I can't believe Santa Esmeralda hasn't been posted yet... They're mostly famous for their covers of The Animals songs...

Most famously used in the final fight scene in Kill Bill 1. I love how they combined disco with flamenco music.

Another Animals cover. The guitar solo around starting from 5:30 blows my mind every time.
