Great forum, been on here a bit a found a few great reads. First ever solo trip to stockholm end of July for the weekend, I would be grateful if you guys would recommend a hostel or hotel/airbnb in the city, I don't mind a reasonable walking distance (20mins) [/align]

Depends on your Budget, I can't really help regarding hotels as in my opinion the Hotels in Stockholm are expensive and a bad value for Money, you'll also pay the Price for an airbnb but at least you'll be in a nice flat.
I use all the time Airbnb when I am in Scandinavian countries, because it offers a large array of choices

thanks for the reply, do you think a shared hostel might be the way forward?
A few years ago I stayed in a Hotel on Stureplan for about 100.00 per night. Which is pretty cheap.
However, it was the size of a prison cell with no windows. I think if you brought a woman there, it might freak her out.

If you're white, go to a tanning salon and bake in a bed for a few hours, grow a long beard and dye it black if you have to, take a flight to Libya then pay a human smuggler a couple of G's for a boat ride to Italy or Greece, try not to get locked up in a detention centre and make your way north with your new found homies until you get to the promised land of blond pussy and expensive alcohol. Once there, you just have to put on an accent and claim you were abused, fuck you could pretend to be a mute and fake some sign language, the Swedes won't care, you should be in a five star Stockholm hotel for free in no time and the government will fund your entire bang mission by doling out pocket money. Easy peasy bro!

Haha so basically I'm going back to their place if anything should arise! nice one..
Hotels are very expensive and Hostels are cheaper, but I wouldn't stay there.
I recall seeing one hotel/hostel that was a former prison.
Best bet is AirBNB.
Being 20 minutes from the Stureplan will suck, I did that last time and hated it.
Summer also isn't the best time for Stockholm, many travel to the islands or overseas.

The first time I went to Stockholm was about 6 years ago, I stayed in a hostel and it was basically as a prison cell, about 10 to 12 m2 with a tiny window and 4 beds, it wasn't cheap for what it was (around 45 euros).
I came back last year and spent there a couple of months. In june it was impossible to find a hotel centrally located for less then 100e, tried 3between 100 and 150e and the 3 were shit, 1 even with no window, no hangers and a shitty bed. Stockholm is expensive, I really recommend to have a good budget and go for airbnb, also not cheap but worth it. My experience with hotels here was bad, I m sure some members can name some decent hotels though.

Also true that in summertime many if not most of people in Stockholm go to the islands the weekends (what they call the archipelago), many of them have a house there, the city though is also enjoyable when the weather is good, there might be just more action in week days than on the weekends (that's for online dating, of course clubs and bars will be packed on weekends)

thanks for the advise Lino, so i'm guessing your choosing private accommodation over hostels because it's easier to invite people back?
a bonus if it happens but more wanting to meet as many people as possible
Depends what's your target, I am in my 30's, I like being in a nice apartment, be able to prepare my food and not eating junk food everyday, and indeed I like inviting the girls for a drink at my place.
If you just go there to party and meet people then go to a hostel, you'll meet other tourists and you might hang out all together

Close to drottninggatan there is this place called Hotel Micro (google it). Nothing fancy, not too expensive and its a very good location. It is in the basement of a hotel. No windows, but well is clean and quiet. I stayed there a couple of nights in the beginning of January.

If you're balling on a budget, (takes skills in Scandinavia), stay at Generator Hostel. 25 euros for a dorm, very modern, clean, and many cute girls. 5 min walk from T Centralen, I highly recommend it.
-Stockholm addict, been there 5x in the past two years

what about first weeks of august? locals still leave the city to go to the "islands"?
