Woman climbs Mount Everest to prove vegans aren't weak, dies

Altitude sickness has very little to do with diet. The Sherpa people don't eat very much meat and yet they are the very best adapted to high altitude work.

So if altitude sickness is based on diet this story basically boils down to 'woman dies on mt Everest of altitude sickness'

The whole vegan thing amounts to 'look at me'.

Nothing to see here, move on.

Australian academic Maria Strydom and Dutch mountaineer die on Mount Everest

Quote:Quote:

Monash University lecturer Maria Strydom succumbed to altitude sickness and reportedly suffered a stroke and snow blindness while making her descent on Saturday.

Quote:Quote:

A second mountaineer, Dutch man Eric Arnold, also passed away during the descent, telling teammates "my body has no energy left," before dying in his sleep, according to Dutch news agency ANP.

Quote:Quote:

Dr Strydom's death was the third climbing related fatality in the Himalayas this week. On Thursday, a 25-year-old Nepali sherpa plunged more than two kilometres to his death. The sherpa, who has not been identified, slipped while he was fixing ropes on nearby Lhotse, the world's fourth highest peak.

Quote:Quote:

Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar has started the long journey down Mount Everest after becoming the youngest Australian to reach the mountain's summit.

So this week alone we had an Australian woman, a Dutch man, and a Nepali sherpa all die on Mt Everest or nearby Lhotse (4th highest peak). We also had a 19 year old Australian chick summit Mt Everest.

I am not sure her being a vegan or being a female had anything to with her death.

Quote:Quote:

Originally from Africa, the experienced climber had previously supported a ban on novice climbers tackling Mount Everest. In the past eight years Dr Strydom had scaled Denali in Alaska, Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey, and Kilimanjaro in Africa.

She was an experienced climber and she already conquered 4 of the seven summits.

It sounds to me like this was an adventurous chick who died doing something she loved and most people aren't capable of doing.

RIP

I enjoy a good fuck SJWs/fuck dumb broads thread as much as anybody but I don't think this particular story calls for that.

Being a vegan didn't kill her, being a fucking idiot did.

We're in an age where an object such as Mount Everest can be seen as some summer endeavour to conquer and post on social media like every other vapid douche out there. Mount Kilimanjaro is another place which has hoards of young and impressionable people descend upon it to seek some form of personal glory to show the world.

There are pictures of the mess these people cause, google them to see what I mean.

People forget that this is a mountain made of solid rock with snow, ice and sheer falls onto certain death. Having a safety rope and experienced tour guide is not a fool proof way of avoiding death if you fuck up and you will fuck up in some form.

Climbing up to 29K ft is no joke but it seems Mrs Strydom turned it into one. Those of you trying to pour cold water on the awesome title are looking at it from the wrong direction.

"vegans can do anything" so lets climb Mt Everest and show those misogynists how it works!

Yea I probably wouldn't make it past 24K but you dont see me doing "meat eaters can do anything" and climbing up Mt Everest.

I think part of the problem is that high mountain climbing has turned into something like tourists on safari, in that they think everyone can do it without any problems. The problem is that these people for the most part have no idea what the dangers are, and that if (when?) something goes wrong, they are dead. I seem to remember the death stats for peak K2 use to be 5% in the late 1990s, but just checking it is now 10%. http://www.explorersweb.com/everest_k2/n..._140793096

When I heard that, I do remember thinking, unless this is the industry I am in, and an expert, why would I take such a risk just for the 'thrill' or bragging rights to say I did this with the risk of death at 5% (now 10%)?

Is the typical person so board and stupid that they do something with no real payoff or benefit, that this seems like a reasonable thing to do nowadays?

I do know that the trend of taking selfies with dangerous animals is just plaint stupidity. (i.e. The subject gets close enough to take a selfie with a bear and then ends up having to run away when the bear starts to lunge for them.)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-tro...ar-selfies
It looks like in at least one of the photos that the bear is starting to 'advance' or even charge at the idiot. I do wonder if they realize that a bear can out run any human?

http://www.mountainnature.com/wildlife/b...unters.htm
bears can run at 30mph

I also seem to remember that people with all kinds of 'poor swimming skills' going through scuba classes in the 1980s and 1990s, with the expected incidents happening when a number of people panic due to not really being up physically for such a sport. Of course, in recent years, with everyone turning into a 'smart phone zombie', people now are spending their lives starting into a small screen.

Problem with Vegans

The benefit is that they usually stay thin.

The problem, from my past experience, is that they typically seemed 'under powered', sick from being under powered all the time, and unable to do much of anything for more than short periods of time.

My observation is that you just can't get enough calories from eating fruit and veggies all the time to do anything all day. Take a look at how many calories fruit and veggies have, and then compare it to some meat. If you are going to be outside and active all day, the typical person will need at least 2,000 calories, and maybe as much as 2,500 or even 3,000 depending on the activity. There is no way you get 2,500 calories from eating a bunch of apples.

You can easily get enough calories from eating grains.

All the vegans I've known are generally malnourished... Jeb Bush low-energy types. Worked with and dated a few. Can't shut up about their "lifestyle change." Karma baby. Eat that meat.

Does RVF have a bot problem? Or do we have a lot of... "news-hungry vegans?"

As other have already pointed out, altitude sickness has nothing to do with altitude sickness. Getting affected by altitude sickness is more random than anything, it can happen even to the healthiest people.

It looks like there are around 2100 guests in the EE forum, 2000 of them are in here.

Maybe all of the vegan hate got picked up by an SJW and shared on social media.

Or maybe if you google "guys who don't know shit about mountain climbing making dumb ass comments about climbers" it brings you to this thread.

You guys are fucking idiots. While sometimes I believe the collective intelligence of this forum could build a nuclear powered submarine out of toothpicks and gum wrappers, sometimes you guys miss it altogether.

She just wanted to go to the top to get a selfie. She probably didn't pack certain safety items in order to pack the world's best selfie stick that could operate in freezing temperatures.

Well, there's no need to tell the vegans they're wrong, if they wanna eat crap and keep meat prices down for the rest of us good for them.
