The big question here is what is the U.S? And what would you be fighting for?
It's not a nation built on common ethnic/cultural lines. The uniting factor used to be common ideals (the free market, all men are created equal, free speech,etc)
But now we've become a multi-ethnic hodepodge society that's politically fractured. There's nothing to fight for.
