Lately my most effective and successful cold approaches have started with the writer/fashion opening, and I wanted to share it.
I see a girl with a girl wearing a coat with a fur-rimmed hood, or some accessory. So I guess it begins with a common indirect comment expressing curiosity about her clothing. Nothing new. A little bit into the conversation, I'll reveal why I asked her.
"You know how guys try to use asking about clothes as an ice-breaker? And they don't care about the actual clothes? Well, I really am interested in the fashion. See, I've been playing around with this idea for a novel. I'm trying to do, you know, describe the characters, what they're wearing and things like that. Gotta do my due diligence."
It's a non-standardized opening that allows the conversation to go anywhere, and so far has had a pretty perfect rate at hooking the person. (It even works with socializing with guys.) If she's well-read and is a literary type, or reads a lot of thrillers, you can discuss really great books there you go.
Or I can give the pitch/blurb for the novel, which as a plus is compelling enough they've always wanted to read what I have written. If they don't ask directly, they'll heavily hint at wanting to.
In which case I'll be all "Hm. I don't know, I'm really protective of what I've got written. It's like my baby... you don't know who to trust."
I can, depending on my read, try to bounce her back to my place if it's at night, since I don't have it on my phone but on my laptop. So it doubles as not only a cool way to open, but as a logistics solution. I haven't really had time to try this in a bar/club setting since I haven't gone in a while, but I'm confident I could make it work there.
It helps you gauge the girl's character as well.
"You think I actually might have a chance at getting an agent/publisher?" I asked skeptically.
Sometimes they'll be very supportive and encouraging, which is a positive sign for her personality.
It also gives makes it easier for her to remember you. I also think it gives the interaction a different feel. It's just a little more intimate and genuine.
