Any suggestions on getting into this game and similar ones? I only started gaming seriously around 2010... because of that I was raised on excellent 3D graphics. I tried Planescape Torment, but couldn't bring myself to go past the first section of it. I am having quite a lot of fun with Heroes 3, though.

planescape torment is really shitty for the first few hours, but it starts to get good quick, but you have to like reading tons of text on screen.

PST is a game of paradoxes: a robot who is becoming human, a succubus who helps people instead of devouring their souls, a brothel with no sex(brothel of slating intellectual lusts), a fallen angel, a malevolent demon that is cursed into only doing good deeds, and of course a hero who wants to die but can't.

If you decide to try again, go to the smoldering corpse bar, talk to Candrian and ask about planewalking, this one conversation gives you a richer conversation than you get in most entire games. All you really need for a party is dakkon and morte, you can add more people, and they can be pretty colorful.

I liked the sensate stones, the pillar of skulls, the fortress of regrets, and the rest.

the fallout franchise is also excellent. new vegas is fantastic, pick it up on a steam sale

I'll try it again. I remember turning it off after I just left the Mortuary. I wandered into some alley and got my ass handed to me. I kept retrying but I was getting raped every single time.

Fully agree, PT you need to get into. But once you are, you will love everything about it. In my second playthrough I checked everything in the morgue for instance, many things to be gained in conversation etc. One of the best parts of the game also is to talk to your companions, deep shit will be exposed.

An absolute classic of a game series. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Au contraire.
Anyone who likes Baldur's Gate should check out Spiderweb Software. Old school indie RPGs that work beautifully on tablets. The old Exile games are being redone once every two years (as Avernum 1, 6, and 2 coming out soon), alternating with the new, more linear Avadon series.

I think he's talking about Avalon, which came out in 2011, not BG. BG has better graphics than it and it's more than a decade older.

Alright, I bought the Enhanced Edition of Icewind Dale (here is the link) about a month ago. It's been a real hoot playing through the original Icewind Dale again.

I have to be honest -- I got more than a bit nostalgic playing the game. I hadn't played it since it came out, so playing it again after not touching it for over a decade is pretty fucking boss.

I would recommend buying that revamped edition if you like the D&D dungeon crawls. The game is combat-heavy and with that remake, you need to jack up the difficulty setting, but avoid "Heart Of Fury" mode unless you are really ready to get your ass worked.

They just don't make games like this anymore.

I played Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition this summer. Beamdog has updated BG1, BG2 and Throne of Bhaal, enhancing the gameplay and adding a little bit here and there without altering any of substantive gameplay. I tooled around with some of these mods in the past and didn't always like them. Unfortunately, the new characters are either bland or insufferable, like the wild mage Neera. Still, this Enhanced Edition was excellent and totally worth the investment.

One thing that I loved about BG are the great characters and the excellent dialogue/banter (here is a link to a bunch of great quotes):

Jan: No, lass, I’m not hurt and the limp is not new. I’ve had it as long as you’ve known me. 'Tis a wooden leg you see. I was smuggling crackers into Waterdeep several years back. The Council had outlawed them due to near constant cracker-related debauchery, you see... I couldn’t let THAT pass. The Council had sealed off all ports and mobilized the army to stop all cracker entry. The city was shut down, martial law was declared and people huddled in their homes for fear and want of crackers. I could not stand idly by while such persecution was visited on the somewhat innocent peoples of Waterdeep. So I smuggled crackers. Salted, unsalted, and herb-riddled alike, it mattered not. All came in and all were consumed in secret orgies of cracker-related tomfoolery. Then came the unpleasant business with the hanging. I hadn’t seen Picklefeather’s eyes bulge like that since that Wyvern kicked him in the ba... (Oops! Innocent elvish lass, have to watch the tongue) uh... in the arm. (Yes, that will do.) The moral of the story is, you reap what you sow. I still own a warehouse full of saltines. I send a box each year to all my friends. Seem to have fewer friends each year as a result, but that's to be expected.

Aerie: What does that have to do with your wooden leg?

Jan: What wooden leg? I have no wooden leg.

Quote:Quote:

Jan: You know, Binky, I've been considering this plan of yours that you had with the Iron Throne and all that. Interesting ideas...but flawed.
Sarevok: 'Binky'? You had best not be addressing me, gnome.
Jan: For instance, whose idea was it to put impurities into the iron? Sounds like the lame idea of some yes-man underling who didn't know when to quit. No doubt you had him flogged.
Sarevok: I will not have my past commented upon by the likes of you, churl. Quiet yourself, lest you experience worse than mere flogging.
Jan: Speaking of a good flog, I'm brought to mind of poor Auntie Sara. She, too, had a master plan to take over the Sword Coast, you know. Although hers was considerably less dramatic and involved the use of some tasty recipes for turnip pie and some mind-altering herbs that Auntie Sara had bought from a rather disreputable Turmish mage.
Sarevok: Are you listening to *nothing* I say?! Desist or suffer the consequences!
Jan: Do you think she would listen to us? You can trust a Turmish mage about as far as you can kick him...and even then it's not a bad idea to carry a good thumping stick. But, alas, Auntie Sara just cackled in her most villain-like way and was determined to carry on with her plan to hypnotize the Sword Coast. Alas, she was completely undone by an over-the-top exposition she gave to a spy that she had captured...and who subsequently escaped, of course, before she could have him killed. It's what villains do, I understand, when they're not busy defiling iron.
Sarevok: I will not be mocked, gnome! This is your last warning!
Jan: Of course, they say that Duke Eltan had already had a bit of Auntie's pie and enjoyed it immensely. Rather than become hypnotized, he just became rather pleasantly obsessed with silken undergarments. This, of course, led to the first Great Underwear Shortage. It's also known as the Three-Year Wedgie Drought, but that's another story completely.

"You are very arrogant, Anomen."

I love this character; the LN/LG Priest of Helm, the Guardian.

He can be viewed as a critique of the Lawful-Nice, Churchianity concept of "turn the other cheek, never bring the sword". He's an arrogant jerk, who thinks most people are beneath him, but instead of being a bad guy he's a hero. His arrogance might be a personality flaw, but it's a minor one; in any other work of fiction this would be the script for the villain, but in BG2 he's one of your most loyal companions (if you're playing a Lawful Good character).

He demonstrates that virtuousness and niceness are two different things - correlated, maybe, but not mandatory.

I had the spanish edition with peninsular accents. I know Spanish guys wont think that way, but, their translations and adaptations are just too funny. I suppose the original was meant to be serious with a "fun" element, but many of the RPG elements sound ridiculous in translation and the "serious" tone of the dubbing adds so many levels of comedy.

My brother and I still joke about it. ¡A la cabeza Bubu!

Great game in all, spent too many afternoons after school on it just walking around the map trying to find every possible side stories or monsters you had no obligation to fight to complete the quests. My favourite where the Ankhegs. The city itself, after years of pixelated 8 bit games, just made my mind explode.

Or what I had to do once...

Once, one of my discs was so scratched, that I was not able to install Bg2. Back then, I did not have internet, so I could not pirate it.

Fortunately, a friend had all of the discs, but from a German edition (mine were English edition). Since I was really desperate (I got the Darkest Day mod on CD and I really wanted to try it out), I decided to borrow it.

And the results were...spectacular.

I remember, when my party escaped the prison and encountered the fight between (ahem...) Irenicus and some wizards, the wizards spoke German. and Irenicus English. Also, shortly thereafter, one of the characters told Irenicus to go fuck himself...in English, and Irenicus responded...in German.

Crazy stuff.

The beta for Torment Tides of Numenera is soon, hopefully i'll find it to download because I missed the kickstarter.

Though i'll buy the game when it comes out still cos I loved the original and pillars of eternity. The only thing that makes me unsure is that the combat is turn based, not much of a fan of that.
