Thoughts, comments? Nick Diaz was banned for a year for testing positive for weed, but Jones will not be banned provided he attends rehab. One could ague that cocaine is a performance enhancing drug, weed on the other hand.......

Don't see why this is a big deal.

Coke is hardly a performance enhancing drug considering how quickly its effects wear off.

Me thinks Jon Jones has been partying too much and got sloppy. He knew there would be a drug test, so WTF was he thinking doing coke so soon to a fight?

I believe that he tested positive for what cocaine metabolizes into (maybe that's the same thing as testing possitive for cocaine I don't know). Whatever he tested possitive for is allowed "outside of competition" which is when he was tested as stated by the governing body of the sport. By their own rules the technically can't punish him.

This is similar to how Phelps was caught with the bong. It's allowed out of competition so technically he couldnt be punished because a) it wasn't a drug test, b) if it was he was out of competition.

I've heard myths of people lighting up with their drug tester after they submit their samples....

Apparantly he got caught just a few days after he came back from Brazil.

I'm just suprised he's able to train hard, be a dominant champion, and still manage to party hard.

He's just an idiot for getting caught.

These tests are designed to enable people to avoid detection for everything they take.

If he got caught, why did they allow him to fight?

The better you are at something, the more 'loopholes' are permitted in the rules. Didn't Michael Phelps get caught smoking the 'evil' marijuana? The guy however is a swimming phenomenon..they will let him continue to swim.

Bottom line is, how marketable and how much revenue does the individual bring in?
Will the charges for him sniffing coke and preventing him from fights recoup on the amount brought in from the punters who will pay to watch him remodel another guy's face?

Yeah probably, thought Jones won it convincingly.

He was tested positive a weeks before the fight, and he passed a subsequent one.

Cocaine is definitely a performance enhancer... if you snort in between rounds.

It destroys your body, it distracts your mind. I know it's illegal but from a sport's point of view it's self-administered poison. Every fighter wishes his opponent is partying his ass of in South America with fine ass women and laboratory grade blow.

Pretty dumb nonetheless.

I thought it was 48-47 for Jones.

It was close and I had Cormier ahead at the end of Round 3, but his cardio ran out or he froze up for whatever reason and Jones took 4 and 5.

I think Jones is a phenomenon, but I do think that now there's enough material for people to analyse, the contenders are getting closer and closer. Cormier managed to get in and in-fight, Gustaffson boxed from the outside.

Still, it was a phenomenal fight and I would look forward to another one down the line. Both fighters did a great job.

I could see 48-47 for Cormier at best, Jones did a good job of winning three rounds very very clearly.

I feel kind of bad for Gustaffson, both the last two guys were hyped up to be the biggest challenge for JJ and Gustaffson is sitting off somewhere saying 'damn I beat that ass, where's my love?'

(for the record I don't think that fight was a robbery, I just think it was the rare fight where the guy who got beaten up still won on points)

As far as Cormier's cardio-does anyone know his fight night weight or what he cuts from? I suspect it was mostly due to the style of Jones, who fights very well on the inside for a tall guy. When you have to bust your ass so hard to get inside of a massive reach advantage, and you still don't have things easy once you are there, it's gonna be a long night.

How did Jones take 5? The only thing that happened was a huge slam from Cormier.

It's funny how they always send these athletes to rehab. There is nothing to suggest he's addicted or it's impacting his life, he just successfully defended his title. But his hands are tied, he has to adhere to the rules in place and pretend to be a 'victim' of this evil drug. I think it's much more likely that the truth is he was partying with a gang of 10's doing rails off their tits having the time of his life and the only thing he regrets is getting caught.

Hmmm...I guess the adrenaline highs of being a famous champion just aren't enough for him anymore, and he wants to kick things up a notch, to get more, but not in a patient way. To fail a coke test, you have to have been doing coke within 3-4 days, so he was likely on a hell of a holiday binge.
If he carries this attitude into his fighting, he'll get careless and get an ass beating.

Jones cardio is pretty good. I believe cutting weight takes away from your cardio. He apparently cuts from 230 so even at the current state he would be a under weight heavyweight.

Probably^^ if you look at Jose Aldo he always tends to fade during championship rounds. It's a bit of a trade off. Size and strength for cardio and speed especially when you're a bigger guy in the lower weigh classes. You look at Nick Diaz not the most muscular welterweight compared to Hector Lombard a freaking tank that cuts a lot of weight . Hector explosiveness and power helps him win the first rounds but he tends to fade at the later rounds while Nick always has the cardio to press with the same power for 5 rounds compared to hector who has to pace himself so he doesn't gas out
