A quick google search shows that he met SJ at a private high school for aspiring actors and musicians. He was in a band that actually toured in HS, so he could've easily used the musician game on her.

In other words, it's not like he closed celebrity hot grown up SJ and then banged fat pig LD. He went from successful musician guy in HS to somewhat successful musician guy in Hollywood, where better game is needed. I'd say his options weren't great considering the competition.
