Costco sells a 40yo bottle of scotch for $700.

Has anyone tried it?

Is it a general brand (like Kroeger or Safeway) or a name-brand?

Kirkland, but they have their products made by other major brands.

It would have to be from a distillery that is at least 40yo. Likely a major conglomerate.

My question is why not list it as $30,000 instead of $29,999.. As if the people who are going to buy this bottle care about the money enough to succumb to marketing trickery.

For me, the Oban 14 is a personal favorite; but I'm also just getting started with scotch. The Balvanie Doublewood isn't bad either, and for Japanese Whisky, the Yamazaki 12 was excellent.

Here it is

No way I would pay $700 but it looks like Costco sells a Kirkland branded 17yr Macallan, an 18yr highland and a 20 year speyside. All are affordable. My local Costco only sells the $700 bottle but I would definitely try the other 3 if they stocked it. The highland 18yr for $33 looks really appealing to me.

Canadian whiskeys, Jack Daniels, and all that other sour mash whiskey is not made with bog peat from Scotland. The water there makes a big difference. There is a big law in the UK that regulates what is real scotch and what is not. Maybe one of the UK RVF fellas when they wake up can drop their better knowledge on this stuff, but it's kinda of a big fucking deal over there for a good reason.

Here's a pretty in depth BBC documentary about the history of Whisky

Here's a more reasonable question.

Found this for $200 near my place:

Worth it? I could pick up 4 bottles of Blanton's or Glenfiddich for that.

Anyone use whisky as an investment? When eBay were still allowing booze auctions a few years back I picked up a bottle of Ardbeg Lord of the Isles 25 for about 180GBP as a present for an old boss. It's now selling for 999 GBP. Wish I bought a couple more...

Whether it's worth it or not for you I can't say, but Yamazaki make fine whiskies age for age quite competitive with scotch. I bet the 18 year old would be nectar.

Dr Johnson rumbles with the RawGod. And lives to regret it.

Do you guys really prefer Glenfiddich 12 to Glenlivet or Macallan? Macallan is my favourite whiskey...so far.

I think Glenfiddich 12 goes down smoother and has the perfect balance of taste and effect but I have no issue with Glenlivet.

My humble opinion objective facts:

<=10: Laphroaig>>>Glenmorangie>Yamazaki

12-14: Hakashu>Yamazaki>>>Glenfiddich>Glenlivet>Macallan>Glenmorangie>Dalmore

15-17: Glenfiddich>>>Dalmore>Glenlivet>Macallan>Laphroaig>Glenmorangie

18-20: Yamazaki>Dalmore>>>Glenmorangie>Glenlivet=Glenfiddich>Laphroaig>Macallan

21+: Yamazaki>>>Glenlivet>Glenfiddich

I mixed Scotch and Japanese whisky together. For Bourbon I usually stick with Blanton's or occasionally Knob Creek.
With Irish whiskey I only ever drink Bushmill's, haven't tried many of them.

If I'm at a bar without much available (like in Asia where many places have only Johnnie Walker) I'll with a Johnnie Walker (Double) Black.

Disclaimer:I don't know what I'm talking about, don't be too hard on my plebeian taste.

I wouldn't pay $29.99 for Scotch.
