Any of You Wierdos Talk to Yourselves?

Isn't talking to yourself indicative of higher mental functioning? I read somewhere that kids who speak to themselves when solving math problems tend to do better than their laconic peers.

But I have always talked myself through tough situations.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

No, I talk to my imaginary friend instead...

But seriously. Anyone who is quite solitary, either temporarily or more permanently, will talk to themselves a bit.

Sometimes, but only a bit. More towards a "hey you gotta do that"

I just came across this thread again, and it occurred to me that I do this a lot less now that I don't drink.

Maybe I was going crazy. [Image: biggrin.gif]

Sometimes I'll have a conversation with myself in my head in the shower.

But then act out gestures and make facial expressions involuntarily, and then feel embarrassed, but I'm in the shower, so I can wash my embarrassment away. [Image: tard.gif]

I talk to myself a lot more than I used to back in the U.S.

When you live in a 3rd world dump, its the only way to have an intelligent conversation.

In one of Zig Ziglar's books, he recommends you tape yourself and listen back; it's similar to an athlete watching a tape of himself and getting a 3rd person perspective.

Not just your tone of voice, but also it helps you as far as content and figuring out whether you are speaking too much or too little.

Well, I still talk to myself just as much as ever, if not more as I've had a lot on my mind recently. I also randomly laugh out loud at shit I think of in public, or when I'm listening to an audiobook in one ear, so people probably think I'm a nutter.

I'm actually about to start experimenting with dictating first drafts of stories, so I'll be that weirdo talking to thin air even more often if the technique is useful to me.

I beg to differ. It may seem that way, but learn the language and I assure you there would be many intelligent conversations to have.

Yes, I understand that takes a long time to reach that level of fluency, but let's not pretend that our decision to live in "3rd world dumps" and not learn the language is the fault of the locals rather than our own.

There are also locals in these places (Cambodia is where I live now) with strong world-class educations, global perspectives, and high degrees of intelligence that are very capable of conversating intelligently in our language. Which is more than we can do in theirs, even though we're the ones relocating.

They are a bit more difficult to root out, but they are very much here. I come across them a lot at the more expensive local gyms. Or fancy restaurants. Business networking events would be another great avenue.

I agree that alienating yourself in a foreign country can lead to more speaking to yourself outloud. I do it myself. But let's not get the reasons twisted and blame our hosts.

Nearly everyone talks to themselves, if not out loud then at least in your inner dialogue. I say dialogue and not monologue because, for the most part, we are all fragmented. We don't have complete unity of will, desire, emotion, and intellect. For example, what we know we should do is not what we necessarily want to do, thus a back-and-forth dialogue.

If you have no inner dialogue, you are probably either an enlightened being nearly ready to dematerialize from this physical world to some sort of cosmic plane of existence, or you're like Forest Gump.

Working toward inner silence is a meditative technique, and the further along you get the more you realize just how much chaos and noise is constantly going on inside that skull of yours.

The key is to analyze what kind of inner dialogue you are having. As you become more whole, more unified of being, it will become more of a monologue. It should be positive. Most people are reinforcing in themselves self-defeating thought patterns all the time.

I wasn't being entirely serious. Learning the local lingo is important. It has gotten me out of more than a few sticky situations.

That said, learning to express yourself with the same level of nuance as your native tongue is a bit of a pipe dream. There are cultural/economic factors at play too.

Most people in 3rd world dumps are working night and day just to put rice on the table. They're not keen to listen to my ramblings on anarchist philosphy, even in the local language.

Believe you me, I've tried.

2% of my talk is "Tits and ass. WB". The other 98% is unfortunately, " Why would you do that, you moron!"

I tend to have monologues in my head, but the most weird thing is that most of the time i'm not speaking to myself, i always imagine my closest friend at the moment is listening the shit i'm telling, so it is like i'm pitching him my thoughts.

I do it all the time, most of time without even realizing it until I notice people in my vicinity looking at me. In fact I'm pretty I was doing it just now in a coffee shop before looking at this thread.

I haven't looked into it to much but I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that I'm an introvert by nature and I'm always in my own head
