Russia bans nearly all food from U.S.

Well we saw that coming. Micky D's was the first to go down, and now it's meat, fish, dairy, and vegetables from the U.S., EU, and Canada.

Those with feet on the ground over there, how does that affect daily life?

Headline from the Moscow Times circa 2015 "Russian cancer, obesity rates down 15%".

Exactly, and now that means the food will be cheaper in the US and the fatties will eat more. Fucccckkkk...

From what I understand it could affect inflation in Russia, as some of the foreign foodstuffs coming in are cheaper than local goods.

Does this mean grocery bills will go down here due to more supply? How much of our market goes to Russia anyway?

Not that much, but perhaps chicken legs could get a little cheaper:

I think US poultry has lots of other markets now.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

About fucking time

I wouldn't trust any meat from the EU following the horse meat scandal and all the food in America is laced with toxic levels of chemical additives and preservatives.

Nice to see the Federation preserving the health and aesthetic beauty of it's people.

Americans are so worried about a zombie apocalypse that they are completely ignoring the fatty apocalypse that has already begun. Well, if the whole world succumbs to the fatty virus at least Russia will be our safe haven....like Israel in World War Z [Image: tongue.gif]

This actually isn't the smartest move on Putin's part. Food imports are rather valuable to Russia. I'd be all for banning the shitty food, but a blanket ban is a poor economic decision. This is just senseless dick waving.

Semi-related Russia has also banned open wireless networks. Putin is no longer pretending that he runs a democracy.

I find it preferable to a dictatorship that pretends it's a democracy. Less hypocrisy that way.

What is a democracy anyway, particularly when most people don't give a shit? Would you rather live in a democracy full of dumb fucks or a dictatorship ruled by a guy who knows wtf is up?

I'm curious to know why Russia imports so much food instead of producing it themselves.
Russia has some of the most fertile soils in the world, and there isn't exactly any lack of land there.

They must have resources to provide all that food for themselves.

Hell, on paper they should even be a big exporter.

I know this is a bit off-topic but honestly with all the additives, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics and GMO food the US produces I think every country should ban the non-organic stuff coming out of the US. And I think the FDA still allows certain percentages of all of the above in 'organic' food too.

There's a reason Americans are in such awful health and a lot of it starts with the food chain.

I question what "democracy" really means in the West these days. Sure doesn't feel as free as it used to. I often felt freer in Russia when I lived there than back in the US where I felt like I could get arrested or detained for any one of a number of petty crimes or workplace/domestic disputes. I think a 13% flat tax, free flow of capital, liberal workplace rules and, in a weird way, sometimes actually less bureaucracy (or ways around it...ahem) certainly helps in Russia.

That said, there's a real lack of 'rule of law' that allows for those extra 'freedoms' in Russia and you generally don't have quite as high a quality of life, medical care, etc. And you can't exactly go shouting from the rooftops how the government sucks, etc. (but people still do it).

Link to the ban on open wireless networks? That's a new one..I was always amazed at how free the internet was in Russia, compared to say China, and assumed it would eventually get severely restricted.

Well after some research I see that only 13% of Russias land is arable and that area is called as the Triangle. Its from the Black Sea up against their Western border up to Estonia and to the Urals.

Much less than I knew, but it's still 27 million ha.
And what I have seen in Russia, a lot of land that previously been used for growing crops has been abandoned later.

There is still a lot if land there to produce food from.

I'm very interested in hearing how you guys define the term 'dictatorship'

The word 'dictator' is thrown around a lot in reference to Putin but he is an elected official after all, isn't he?

At what point does an elected official become a dictator?

Is it because he generally disagrees with 'the West's narrative' on issues such as Syria and their stance on homosexuals? Is it because the West associates him with the bygone Soviet era?

What makes him a dictator? I would genuinely like to know

Because West always says that Russian elections are staged.

Might be, but Putin still has enormous support.

Anyone who isnt Obama is a dictator basically. I've said it on other threads, some countries and people need dictators, otherwise they become shitholes like Iraq, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and so on

In Russian though, hgt it from a bud in the Finnish Military actually. They are quietly raising their level of preparedness. This kind of activity haven't been seen since the attempted coup attempt on Gorbachev. Though the recent stirrings are more cold war flavored.

In related news Russia has also forced the closure of its last independent TV channel. So obviously there's a trend from the Kremlin in excerting more control over the information flow.

It will die down, Russia is allies with China along with the other developing economies that are starting to get big, and wish to have the same independent yet involved with International affairs stance that Russia has.
The media is really trying to fuel this cold war hysteria, the militaries are going to build up because that whats they are going to do when a threat is going to emerge, but honestly I can't see a large scale invasion happening.

The allegations that Russia is trying to take back Eastern Europe, is just hilarious, and Putin being a dictator. The government is dodgy as hell but that guy has way more support than Barrack Obama. Most Russian women I know adore him and most men respect him. The only ones who seem to be against him, are those who want to do business or live in the West, which I completely understand of course.

It has all gone back to the days of the empires however, different clothes, new technology but its the same shit.
