Dynamic between personal time and money

I have to bring up a question that I believe is very relevant in modern time - the balance between personal time and money. We all(generalization) want a big home, expensive cars, luxury clothing, staying at top hotels etc. But in exchange for what exactly?

Is it worth months(maybe years) of personal time spent in order to achieve, a car, for the regular employee? Several weeks of work to spend one week overseas? Naturally, the expenses and 'quality' of life is directly related to ones income and must be held in check. However, I seriously question people attitude towards the worth of their own limited personal time in relation to possessions that many times does not offer any real value.

Traveling is not necessarily expensive. Neither is a car or clothes. A large home at the center is expensive, but in exchange to what personal scarifice?

Obviously, living on a extremely tight budget is not desirable but neither is spending all your time for an income. Where do you draw the line ?
