Underwhelming travelling experiences

I'm not surprised Australia gets such a bad rap in this thread. The minimum wage here is $14.50 and our dollar has been overvalued for a long time now (it has depreciated a lot in the last month though) so it's very expensive for travelers. Meanwhile the way Australia is portrayed in oversea media is nothing like what is in reality, it's all Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef and some Indigenous man in traditional costume playing a didgeridoo, not to mention killer spiders and Kangaroo's. Yet all of those things are outside the reality of 99% of Australian people since everyone lives in a handful of coastal metros, half the country in 3 alone. All Sydney has is it's beautiful harbour and beaches and the (overrated) Opera House and Melbourne hip neighbourhoods, street art and Victorian terraces, big whoop considering the distance and cost... Yet Australian hostels are filled with backpackers from the U.K and Northern + Western Europe in Summer. Most of them come to Australia after hitting South East Asia which of course is way way cheaper, yet they all seem to love it here. I understand why all these Swedes bother coming all the way to Australia when there's so much more to see for cheaper in Europe.

^ No need to apologize.
You forgot to mention that Australia has produced some pretty sweet fucking music.

By the way, Sydney or Melbourne must be one of the best places in the world to host and pump n' dump Couchsurfing bitches if you have a flat at a convinient place.
I guess a lot of girls who are not normally using CS are trying their luck in Australia as their first time when they realise their wallet isn't fat enough for Oz.

I know a few decent looking Canadian girls who are doing the two year visa thing in Australia. Surely it can't be that bad, there must be enough tourist pussy coming in to make it somewhat decent.
Montreal should never be on this list.
Is there any good spots in Italy?
Greek Islands should not be on this list, granted I was there 20 years ago but there are so many to choose from.

One of my wingmen who lived in the CBD used to do this, he had 3 housemates and wasn't particularly attractive but was still getting blown up by Euro girls on CS looking to stay with him. When I move there I will definitely be doing the same.

A decent-looking G with a nice pad (doesn't even have to be central, just in an area with decent beaches or entertainment) would definitely bang lots of immature European bitches on CS.

This about sums up how I'd feel about Australia after coming from Europe or SEA.

Australia is looked at as some sort of exotic Heaven island in America. Anglo girls can't wait to visit for this stupid reason. I would definitly target tourists if I was living there.

My biggest problem with Thailand was how touristy it was. Not just touristy, but filled with a bunch of drunk ass high school grads that act like idiots and piss all over the country. Now, I know there are places where you can get away from that scene, but compared to other countries in the world, they are very far and few between.

The locals were either really nice or just trying to make a buck off you, and the line between that was very thin and murky.

Secondly, I thought it was dirty, chaotic, and messy. Bangkok in particular didn't impress me. I hated the pollution (and this is coming from someone who lived in Mexico City for a year) where I couldn't take a tuk-tuk without being short of breath the rest of the day. I also hated the nastiness of the p4p scene in Bangkok. It really pissed me off seeing old German dudes walking around with 13 or 14 year old Thai girls, it's absolutely revolting. A few times pros wouldn't leave me alone, even going so far to grab my dick and balls in the street.

I also once saw some guy parading around a sickly elephant that was eating garbage on the street to make money off of tourists. The pain in the eyes of the elephant was heartbreaking. These types of things I find deplorable.

I didn't find the culture very interesting. There was some cool things about it, and I liked the general principles Bhuddism has installed in the general public, but I thought a lot of it was cheesy. But then again, I am kind of biased, I don't particularly have much interest in any Asian culture.

The Thai girls were meh. Once again, Asians don't really interest me. Although I found many attractive and there were some sweethearts around, I often found them immature and silly which is unattractive to me.

There was some nice beaches and stuff, but it doesn't outweigh the other aspects of the country I didn't like.

The food was brilliant though.

I regret not going up North, but the country put me off so much that I would never go back again.

Regarding Thailand, how Csn those guys legally walk around with young girls like that? I always assumed it was illegal and the guys that go there for that would try to hide it and keep behind closed doors. Disgusting

Have you seen Bangkok or only lower Sukhumit? The stuff you describe happens exactly there, in the shady Sukhumit district. It's a part of Bangkok, it's a part of Thailand, but it is not Thailand.

Well, it's a huge city so I have obviously only seen a fraction of it.

I went to various places around the city, the names I have long forgotten by now. But it is part of Thailand, as that type of shit happens in places like Pattaya and Phuket as well.

But that's not to say I think all of Thailand is like that, it isn't, but it grosses me out.

The fact that Thailand is one of the most common tourist destinations + sex tourist destinations in the world tarnishes a lot of its unique and interesting attributes that's all. And that is probably the number one reason I didn't like it.

In contrast, I really enjoyed Laos despite it being a significantly less developed country.

If I was to ever go back to SE Asia (not sure if I ever will...) I would explore countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, or Burma, where you can actually get away from that type of scene and enjoy the culture more for what it is.

Until then I'll just continue to enjoy my life in Latin America and North America, which I have come to get used to and love.

The question is whether those girls - outside of very rare cases, child prostitution problems in common tourist areas have been blown way out of proportion in the past from what I've heard - actually are underage (which is thankfully definitely illegal in Thailand), or if some people just make a rash judgment based on many Asians looking younger than they are, coupled with the revulsion they feel about seeing old guys with girls (prostitutes) 30, 40 or 50 years younger?

I'll find out myself in three weeks. Six days in Bangkok first, and then the next five weeks traveling around Thailand. Planning on seeing if I can find some of the slightly less touristy and crowded places down in the south when I go there the last two or three weeks. Maybe some of the beaches around Krabi as an alternative to Phuket for example.

There is an estimated 30-40,000 girls under the age of 18 involved in the sex trade in Thailand, one of the highest in the world.

This is not blown out of proportion, it is a very real and serious problem.

Oh I don't doubt it's a massive problem, I've just not heard it being something you see blatantly out in the open in tourist areas (and Sukhumvit is obviously a major tourist area) in Thailand anymore.
As huge as the tourist focused part of the sex trade is there, it's supposedly a drop in the ocean compared to what's aimed at the local men.

Maybe if you stayed somewhere other than Khaosan or lower Sukhumvit you wouldn't have such a jaded view on Bangkok, and Thailand. Ya there are a lot of tourist dickheads but it is very easy to avoid them (as you said Bangkok is a massive city). I am sure there are some young girls working in the sex trade but you definitely do not see 13-14 year old girls walking with old men in the middle of Bangkok, maybe in Cambodia. Did you maybe happen to travel there in the 1970s or is this a more recent trip?
